Magazine production, editorial layout and illustration experience are required. The Graphic Designer / Illustrator (GD/I) develops creative concepts for various print and interactive media under direct supervision. He/She participates in concept development and information presentation and is able to produce graphics from start to finish independently with excellence. Must be able to work under tight deadlines.

Requirements

• BA or BFA in Graphic Design or related field PLUS 2 years of experience OR 6+ years of experience in the design field
• Standout illustrations in portfolio
• Standout editorial layouts in portfolio
• Familiarity with the Greater Flint area and social culture a plus

Skills

• A strong foundation for the proper use of typography, color theory and design balance
• Ability to pay great attention to detail while maintaining tight project deadlines
• A drive to learn and grow while being a motivated and supportive team member
• Must be fluent with the Mac operating system and programs, with extensive knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite 5, including Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign
• Drawing skills with an attention to detail (both by hand and digital pen)
• Create pre-print files based on customer art and order specifications.
• Make necessary adjustments to size, layout, imprint colors, or items in order to ensure end result is the best possible printing outcome.
• Participate in design briefs with clients, editors and/or marketers to identify their needs

Responsibilities

The GD/I helps ensure the utmost quality of all creative projects. The GD/I prepares for projects by gathering information and materials, plans concepts by studying information and materials, and uses the concept to design rough layouts of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetics. The GD/I obtains rough layout/concept approval and then creates a final design that is polished and effective. Although primarily responsible for design work, the GD/I is also responsible for completing those projects by coordinating with outside agencies, art services, printers, etc. to complete projects efficiently.
