Governmental Affairs Coordinator

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking a highly motivated candidate for the Governmental Affairs Coordinator position. This position will significantly contribute to the goals and priorities of the Sheriff’s Office as a legislative liaison, monitoring legislative activities impacting the Sheriff’s Office. This position will also work closely on Veteran’s Affairs and provide Victim’s Assistance.

The essential duties include:

•Coordinates, plans, develops and manages legislative activities at local, state, and federal levels of government impacting the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

•Represents the agency and speaks before the Board of County Commissioners, State Legislature, and federal government; develops appropriate contacts with local, state and federal authorities on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office.

•Demonstrates an understanding of Law Enforcement programs, trends and priorities, target audiences, appropriate goals, and success indicators; effectively construes law enforcement reports, and regulatory or legal interpretations.

•Coordinates legislative testimony; identifies and prepares subject matter experts to testify on potential legislative actions, which could impact law enforcement matters.

•Analyzes, monitors and reports on legislative, budgetary or program initiatives which affect the Sheriff’s Office programs or policies; collects relevant information to recommend policy solutions; reviews/develops pertinent legislative proposals and assists staff to determine impact on the agency.

•Coordinates with staff from the Sheriff’s Office and Veteran Court Treatment Team to promote public safety through an inter-agency, collaborative, non-adversarial treatment strategy for veterans involved in the criminal justice system.

•Serves as Veterans Affairs contact for Sheriff’s Office; participates in community outreach events; builds relationships with veterans who are involved in court proceedings, participate in the Veteran Court Treatment Program, or have been victims of crime.

Connects veterans with assistance, benefits and resources.

•Responds to crime scenes to provide liaison services to victims and victims’ families; interviews and counsels with victims concerning physical wellbeing, emotional stability, and victim rights available under state law; provides assistance to immediate families of victims involved in homicides, suicides, missing persons, and court proceedings.

•Provides immediate information and referrals to social services and community resources; coordinates the provisions of crisis intervention, emotional support, short term counseling, financial assistance, food and shelter.

•Coordinates and acts as a liaison with District Attorney’s Office Victim Assistance Unit to connect resources with individuals who were victimized by crime; networks with social service providers and community leaders to maintain current referral resources.

•Collects, maintains and analyzes data on victims, nature of offenses and program services which were provided.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, political science, or related field; three (3) years of progressively responsible experience with legislative liaison activities or a closely related field, and one (1) year of experience providing services related to criminal justice, corrections, or crime victims.

Must pass a thorough background screening and have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Experience can substitute for education.

Preferred Job Requirements:

Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience with legislative liaison activities or a closely related field, three (3) years of experience as a Crime Victim/Witness Advocate, or two (2) years of service in a branch of the armed forces of the United States.
