JOB SUMMARY:

Joining the Swoop Frontend Team, you will help build our product’s UI/UX features and design, with an eye towards building a highly performant frontend. The person in this position will use their excellent React, Javascript, NodeJS, HTML5, and CSS skills to improve Swoop’s web-based client application. You will work with the Search Team to create interfaces to capture search intent. You will design ways of visualizing streams of data to the user and construct features to enable iteration upon search results to be fluent and intuitive. A strong candidate should be independent, intrinsically motivated, a quick-learner, competitive, and dedicated to the success of Swoop Search.

Applicants should be authorized to work in the United States, undergo a background check, and be willing to relocate to Madison, Wisconsin.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with the product and engineering teams at Swoop to execute our roadmap
Design and implement features
Optimize the frontend client for maximum speed and scalability
Write unit, functional, and integration tests
Conduct reviews and provide feedback on UI, UX, and engineering best practices
Conceptualize and implement original ideas that bring user-friendliness to a complex control system
Troubleshoot front end issues and provide solutions to solve them
Stay up-to-date on emerging technologies

KEY COMPETENCIES:

Skilled in Javascript, Python, CSS, SCSS, NodeJS, React, Redux, Express, and Webpack
Good understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX
Excellent problem solving and debugging skills

BONUS COMPETENCIES:

Experience with any of the following technologies:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Undergraduate degree or above
Eligible to work in the USA
A portfolio that demonstrates UI skills
1+ year of full-time work experience on a software development team
1+ year of JavaScript programming experience using React, Redux, Express (NodeJS), and Webpack (or close alternatives)
2+ years of HTML/CSS experience, including concepts like layout, specificity, cross-browser compatibility, and accessibility
2+ years experience with browser APIs and front end optimization
Experience scaling a NodeJS application

BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:

Background in art or design
Previous work experience in government, healthcare or financial sectors
Previous employment at a dynamic start-up company
Background in science or math (biology, genetics, chemistry, physics, applied math, etc)
