Fraud Investigator (Insurance Investigator)

Incumbents conduct field investigations of actual and potential criminal subjects under varying conditions including the interviewing of hostile witnesses and suspects. Some travel and extended working hours may be involved.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Conducts field investigations of criminal, civil, administrative and regulated activities including investigation of suspected crimes in insurance fraud that may include, auto theft, arson, fraudulent health care, and staged auto accidents
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies such as the, F.B.I., U.S. Attorney, and the Idaho Attorney General as a specialist in criminal insurance fraud
  • Serves as team participant during investigations with other law enforcement jurisdictions
  • Gathers, prepares and presents evidence in court and testifies as an expert witness
  • Prepares investigative reports
  • Presents criminal cases to law enforcement agencies, and testifies against violators of the Idaho Code
  • Conducts field investigations and serves subpoenas
  • Conducts analysis of financial records, insurance policies, bank records, accident reports, medical reports, statements under oath, and other related documents to determine the nature and extent of criminal insurance fraud violations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of:
    • investigative techniques and procedures
    • rules of evidence and discovery
    • court procedures
    • legal rights of citizens
  • Experience:
    • analyzing documents and identifying facts for evidence and case history to detect discrepancies and identify possible violations
    • conducting fact finding interviews to obtain statements and evidence from parties including suspects, victims, and witnesses to detect possible violations of the law and obtain information to use in the legal proceedings
    • preparing for hearings
    • preparing reports, affidavits /exhibits
    • locating and verifying assets
    • in a clerical or related position composing written statements and proofreading correspondence; entering and retrieving data on a computer; and applying and explaining policies
  • Some knowledge of bookkeeping practices
  • Valid driver’s license
  • The hired candidate will have to pass a current criminal history and background investigation, as well as every five years thereafter

Preferred candidates will have (if you possess any of the following, please reference them in your resume) :

  • At least two or more years of professional work experience as an insurance adjuster, law enforcement officer, insurance investigator paralegal or related occupation or performing similar work at a high level with minimal supervision.
  • Membership in professional societies such as Certified Fraud Examiner or Certified Insurance Fraud Investigator
  • Four year degree in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice or Administration of Criminal Justice
