Title : Food Service Worker

Location : VA Hospital 2101 Elm Street North Fargo, ND 58102

Type of Position : 120 Day Contract with an extendable 120 Days (based on the need of the Government)

Positions Available : One (1) Part-Time positions available.

The successful candidate will report to the On-Site Supervisor and Human Resources at our corporate office. Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Responsible for the accurate assembly, portioning, and garnishing of all items prepared in the salad and dessert preparation area.
  • Responsible for maintaining proper personal hygiene during food preparation and service (including hand washing, etc).
  • Utilizes information from Computrition printouts to create the CLC dining room special trays and special trays for serving hospital salads and desserts in the Pod area.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the correct number of salads and desserts dished in conjunction with the census and production reports.
  • Once the salads and desserts are prepared, places the appropriate foods in the correct locations for service.
  • Responsible for the proper care of cold foods. Follows proper sanitation procedures in the preparation and service of cold food items (HACCP).
  • Responsible for positive patient identification when delivering trays or nourishments.
  • Assists patients in completion of selective menu and choice of the proper foods according to their individual diet during tray pick up.
  • Responsible for serving correct hot or cold food items when working on the pod or in the CLC dining room. Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diet and the food items designated on the menu.
  • Responsible for using the right combination/measurement of cleaning and sanitizing agents when cleaning equipment. Follows proper cleaning procedures to maintain sanitation standards as outlined in NFS.
  • Inventories and orders for daily usage, such items as regular and low salt butter, frozen juices, salt free bread, etc.
  • Responsible for setting up PM and HS nourishments.
  • Sets up late meals at 10:30 am, 1 pm, 2:30 pm, and 6 pm.
  • Labels, covers, stores and dates food according to sanitation practices (HACCP).
  • Washes pots and pans.
  • Works the clean or dirty end of the dish machine.
  • Cleans the grill if needed. Cleans the steam tables. Cleans mixers, robot coup or other food preparation after use.
  • Chops vegetables.
  • Wraps silverware.
  • Delivers and picks up food trays at patient bedside or in the CLC dining room.
  • Assists dinner cook in the evening to assemble “hot” special items. Gathers utensils needed for the steam tables.
  • Prepares canned soup, potato sub, mashed potatoes and special items. Places these items in the steam table and covers all hot food items.
  • Prepares Crystal Light and fills the dispensing machine as necessary. Takes apart the machine and cleans on the defined time schedule.
  • Discards any food items that have expired.
  • Prepares sandwiches for cold sack lunches. Labels and dates sandwiches with a “use by” date.
  • Completes the salad prep inventory.

Required Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of prior related experience
  • Able to read and write in the English language in order to follow established procedures and recipes, and read tray tickets during meal service.
  • Be a US Citizen
  • Possess basic math skills that will be applied during portioning and serving of food.
  • Understand food terminology, including a working knowledge of ingredients used and how to evaluate freshness and safety of ingredients used in food preparation
  • Possess the ability to follow oral and written instructions such as computerized menus, food production worksheets, schedules, standardized recipes and instructions.
  • Ability to communicate with patients, dietitians, supervisors, lower-graded workers and Fargo VA Healthcare System employees using diplomacy and tact to accomplish desired results.

Salary : $11.36 per hour, plus 4.27 per hour for health and wellness benefits (for Full-Time employees). $11.36 per hour (for Part-Time Employees).

Part-time shifts are from 3:30pm to 7:30pm.

Testing Requirements : Candidates chosen for consideration must be able to successfully complete a government background screening.
