Financial Analyst I

Job Summary

The Financial Analyst I performs financial analyses (e.g., client level profitability, variance comments, trend analysis, financial statement accuracy, asset expenditures, etc.) across various products and sector groups. He/she compiles and prepares reports, graphs, charts, and written financial summaries. This position performs general finance and accounting processes including researching, analyzing, creating, and processing monthly journal entries. The Financial Analyst I supports a defined operational group and communicates with various management levels. He/She acts as the key Finance and Accounting liaison with the Operations team in areas of financial training, general financial statement support, client pricing efforts, General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), internal controls (e.g., revenue recovery, Accounts Receivables [AR], audits, billing adjustments, etc.), forecasting, and annual budgeting.

  • Creates financial reports and verifies client and building details to ensure accuracy of financial statements.
  • Produces monthly financial reports to explain variances between business plan and forecast, actual results, and trends.
  • Develops monthly reports as needed to conduct financial analysis (e.g., accounts payable spend, open AR balances, Construction in Progress [CIP] aging, etc.).
  • Supports requests from internal groups (e.g., Operations, UPS Shared Services, etc.) to provide analysis on various issues (e.g., fixed assets,CIP,AR, inter-company charges, etc.).
  • Assists in developing and maintaining planning tools (e.g., Khalix, etc.) and templates to utilize in planning and forecasting.
  • Assists in the collection of operating expenses from various support functions to contribute to financial planning.
  • Assists in performing variance analysis of plans to identify areas where targeted projections are not being obtained.
  • Assists in updating monthly and quarterly forecasts to ensure accurate forecasts are maintained.
  • Assists with training on planning and forecasting tools and methodologies to provide education to the operations team.
  • Assists in performing financial ratio and metric analysis to track profitability.
  • Assists in performing variance analysis (i.e., actual versus plan and actual versus prior period) to provide data for evaluating business results.
  • Assists in analyzing sector and product trends for customer profitability and financial returns to identify areas for improving performance.
  • Assists with client profit and loss analysis to aid in new pricing solutions.
  • Assists in analyzing natural account balances (e.g., labor, occupancy, supply expenses, etc.) to identify areas for cost improvement.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert (e.g., standard month-end entries according to GAAP, etc.) to provide proper financial controls.
  • Identifies opportunities for revenue recovery and conducts audits to ensure adherence to contract metrics and contract compliance.
  • Supports the development and documentation of polices and procedures to ensure consistency in financial processes (e.g., sales tax, client rebates, proper general ledger coding, etc.)
  • Assists in developing and conducting systems training to ensure users effectively utilize tools provided.
  • Uses internal systems tools (e.g., Oracle, Brio, etc.) and external systems tools (e.g., internet, government sites, banks sites, etc.) to conduct detailed analysis of client profitability.
  • Assists in training programs on financial concepts and accounting processes for Operations teams to improve profitability.
  • Contacts internal customers to gather information and resolve issues.

Preferred Competencies

  • Identifies the business problem that requires research; identifies sources of information that are relevant to a problem; reviews literature and data related to the research question; summarizes information from data sources.
  • Captures/documents specific and accurate information; learns subjects thoroughly and in detail; completes work with thoroughness; supplies appropriate details when requested; maintains organized files.
  • Possesses ability to generate simple reports using basic functions in software, and/or writing basic queries; identifies information required to complete reports and identifies existing reports generated by others.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Access – Required
  • Experience with Microsoft BI Tools and SQL Server – Preferred
