Financial Accountant II

Role Summary
The Financial Accountant II supports the general accounting team in general ledger accounting functions by owning the more complex account reconciliations and related journal entries. This Accountant performs technical accounting research and writes memos documenting conclusions and proper accounting treatment and performs variance fluctuation analysis of P&L; accounts.

Scope & Complexity

  • This position supports financial accounting activities for Alaska Air Group (AAG) and its subsidiaries.

Key Duties

  • Supports the general accounting team in general ledger accounting functions by owning the more complex account reconciliations and related journal entries (e.g. stock-based compensation, marketable securities, fuel hedging, debt, etc.).
  • Performs technical accounting research and writes memos documenting conclusions and proper accounting treatment.
  • Owns internal financial reporting schedules, such as the monthly financial package, ROIC, and cash flow forecasts.
  • Continuously improves account reconciliation automation to ensure efficiency and promote productivity.
  • Performs variance fluctuation analysis of P&L; accounts compared to plan and period over period changes in income statement and balance sheet accounts.
  • Assists in the preparation of monthly closing packages for all entities.
  • Identifies and drives process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the documentation and monitoring of internal controls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job-Specific Skills

  • Required
  • A minimum of 2 years of accounting/general ledger experience in an automated environment using financial software (or similar experience).
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of accounting procedures and a strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Auditing skills, with the ability to research and reconcile difficult accounts.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills with an emphasis on Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work cross-divisionally.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule based on business needs.
  • Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Preferred
  • PeopleSoft experience.
  • Experience with Blackline reconciliation and matching modules.
  • Experience working with benefit plan financial statements.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, with a focus in accounting or a business related discipline, is required.
  • A CPA license is preferred. Exam eligibility is required.
