Qualifications

Required:
BA/BS plus at least 4 years of professional accounting work experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 8 years.

Experience with and access to the University’s Enterprise Financial and HRMS Systems

Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.

Excellent problem solving skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication with good customer service skills.

Preferred:
Certified Approver status.

Experience with ISO/ESO financials.

About the Job

Duties include:
Manages finances for both non-sponsored and sponsored projects up to and including auditing, monitoring compliance, budgeting.

Is the Certified Approver for the Department and associated Centers.

Spearheads the annual budget preparation and year-end closing.

Provides comprehensive financial reports, projections, and budgets for projects, faculty, the Department and associated Centers.

Manages commitments and match funding from the College.

Manages the Department’s Foundation and Endowed Funds.

Manages the Department’s/Faculty ICR accounts.

Involvement with ISO/ESOs includes working with the owners for rate structure development, as well as billing and payments.

Create vouchers/journal entries as part of accounts management.

Approvals for transactions created by the department’s FP2 (e.g. effort, PCards, ERs).

Payroll distributions and effort certification.

The person in this position reports directly to the Department Administrator and works in tandem with the Finance Professional 2 to meet the accounting needs of the department and associated Centers. Some functions also require collaboration with the College financial group. Most importantly, this person works closely with and provides expert financial advice to the Department Head and Administrator so that informed financial decisions can be made.

About the Department

The N.H. Winchell School of Earth Sciences lies within the College of Science & Engineering. The School is the umbrella under which resides the Institute for Rock Magnetism, the Limnological Research Center (National Lacustrine Core Facility & Continental Scientific Drilling Coordination Office), the Minnesota Geological Survey, and the Department of Earth Sciences, including the Polar Geospatial Center.

The department’s administrative and accounting office is located in Pillsbury Hall on the Minneapolis, East Bank Campus. In late summer of 2017, Earth Sciences will move to the newly remodled Tate Building on the Mall. www.esci.umn.edu
