Grade: 815 Salary Range: $48,484 – $82,617 Annually

Employees in these classifications earn 104 hours of sick leave and 104 hours of vacation leave annually. Vacation accrual rates increase with seniority. Sick Leave balances are unlimited and Vacation balances have a cap of 288 hours.

The Water Quality Management and Operations Division of the Tucson Water Department is seeking a professional to effectively participate as a team member in and manage environmental compliance programs for the utility. This position is an independent position that will assist in identifying, investigating and resolving compliance related issues, implementing programs for the utility with regards to environmental and regulatory programs, and coordinating and monitoring the effectiveness of these programs. This position has the potential to serve as a first-level supervisor.

Examples of essential duties may include but not limited to:

  • Develops and participates in programs to meet environmental regulations and reduce utility risks.

  • Develops reports and memorandums for internal and external audiences.

  • Develops and manages record-keeping systems and regulatory databases.

  • Participates in environmental assessments and investigations.

  • Participates in permit acquisition, compliance, and closure activities.

  • Provides department representation and technical coordination functions to regulatory agencies and outside agencies.

  • Develops presentations for technical and lay audiences.

  • Performs and documents risk assessments and investigations.

  • Trains utility staff in compliance requirements.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, or directly related field.

  • Three years of experience in environmental regulatory compliance programs.

  • Valid driver’s license.

    PLEASE NOTE: The education/experience equivalency WILL NOT be considered. Minimum requirements must be met as written above.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    The ideal candidate will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as relevant experience in the areas listed below:

  • Three years of experience in surface or groundwater resource work.

  • Three years of experience with a community water or wastewater utility.

  • Considerable knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations.

  • Relevant experience with CERCLA (Superfund) and other groundwater or soil remediation projects.

  • Three years of supervisory experience directing compliance programs.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    This position requires a satisfactory criminal background check, Motor Vehicle History Report and Public Records Check. Reference checks may also be conducted prior to an offer of employment. Employment offers are contingent upon successfully passing any of the above requirements.
