Engineering Specialist Traffic (NOVA – Northern Region Operations)

Northern Region Operations Traffic Engineering Section is seeking an experienced lead technician to conduct complex studies to address the requests for signage, pavement marking, and residential traffic management work efforts. Assist Traffic Engineering Management in the signal, speed and safety studies. Serve as the primary point of contact with the County on traffic calming issues. Assist with the day-to-day operations of technicians conducting signage, pavement marking, and residential traffic management work efforts by assigning, reviewing, and tracking work activities. Respond orally and in writing to local elected officials, government agencies, and the general public regarding traffic engineering issues. Represent VDOT and Traffic Engineering Section in meetings, involving assigned work areas, with local elected officials, government agencies, and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrates considerable working knowledge of traffic engineering principles and current practices, standards, and regulations. Experience collecting and analyzing transportation data which includes developing recommendations. Experience using Traffic Engineering software including CADD , PowerPoint, and Sign Design. Experience conducting meetings with internal and external customers or other entities such as citizens and local jurisdictions. Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and written. Ability to lead and train others. Proven ability to develop solutions to complex traffic issues in assigned area. Good listening skills with the ability to establish good working relationships among internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and work in a fast paced, urban environment. Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of agency policies and procedures. Experience/training working in a traffic engineering environment. Degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully fulfill the position requirements.

Special Requirements

Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV driving records will be verified. All employees are required to work during emergency operations, which may include work outside normal work hours; assignments may vary based on business needs. Position is telework eligible. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment.
