Engineer: Process Safety

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Process Safety Engineer in the Facilities Management and Security Services (FM&SS). The incumbent will be responsible to identify process safety hazards, evaluate the risk of those hazards and assist in the development of effective solutions to mitigate the risk, using elements of Process Safety Management (PSM). This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

  • Active member of the FM&SS Engineering team with joint responsibility for developing and implementing the Engineering Operational plans;
  • Develop and track CSIR Process Safety compliance registers;
  • Solely account for planning, coordinating and managing Process Hazards of CSIR operations for up to five (5) year timeline;
  • Ensure adherence to and compliance with regard to statutory requirements, legislation and site operating procedures like the OHS Act and other regulations;
  • Complete process safety reviews and develop recommendations for addressing process safety issues;
  • Provide input into risk assessment through the use of risk analysis techniques and tools;
  • Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes;
  • Conduct or coordinate worker training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment;
  • Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees’ exposure to work hazards;
  • Compile, analyse, and interpret statistical data related to process incidents;
  • Review employee safety programs to determine their adequacy in areas of Process Safety;
  • Provide coaching to Divisions/Clusters on identification and resolution of process safety issues;
  • Lead Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) on existing and new processes;
  • Provide oversight for the organisation on the Management of Change (MOC) process;
  • Manage the site PHA schedule and recommendation implementation plan;
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for incidents and near misses related to process safety;
  • Provide oversight and conduct audits for Pre Start-up Safety Reviews (PSSR);
  • Participate on teams responsible for implementing new products and processes;
  • Actively engage both internal and external stakeholders regarding process safety management;
  • Influence and implement an action plan according to CSIR & Industry standards;
  • Develop and implement business and operational plan for CSIR process safety compliance;
  • Facilitate meetings with stakeholders;
  • Ensure compliance with SHEQ regulatory requirements and standards in area of responsibility;
  • Ensure all CSIR process risks are identified and mitigation measures implemented;
  • Administer and manage designated portfolio professionally and effectively;
  • Provide leadership, technical direction and guidance to the CSIR for management of Process Safety;
  • Effective management of relationships with the business and provide professional leadership, influence and two-way communication;
  • Manage, mentor, coach and play an advisory role for staff growth and development;
  • Identify and implement training interventions;
  • Recommend and facilitate developmental plans;
  • Ensure optimal resource deployment;
  • Provide input to CSIR Division/Cluster Process Safety budget;
  • Ensure cost effective service delivery;
  • Ensure compliance with financial legislative requirements.

  • Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering with at least five years’ experience in Process Safety Management, such as Process Safety Engineer with sound track record in:
  • Development and implementation of process safety standards including leading process hazard analyses;
  • Consequence calculations and evaluation of occupied buildings to provide an adequate degree of protection;
  • Incident investigation tools and techniques;
  • Administering and managing process safety at multiple and diverse sites;
  • SHE Management Systems;
  • OHS Act;
  • Sub-contractor management;
  • People management;
  • Project and financial management;
  • Operational planning and implementation;
  • Understanding industry standards and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic process safety initiatives;
  • Computer literate in MS Office Package and Process Safety Software;
  • Must be in possession of a valid Driver’s License.
