Education Assistant (Full-Time)

Reports to: Education and Programs Manager

Status: Full-time, non-exempt; Tuesday – Saturday schedule, some nights and weekends required

Under the supervision of the Education and Programs Manager, the Education Assistant assists with the administrative coordination and production of MCD’s educational efforts. In addition, the Education Assistant will serve as the primary point person for the recruitment and scheduling of the Museum’s docent and volunteer program.

Primary Responsibilities

– Assists the Education and Programs Manager with the production, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of MCD’s public programs and educational offerings

– Under the direction of the Education and Public Programs Manager, ensures the successful implementation of both on and off-site programming; serves as day-of coordinator for in-house signature programs

– Serves as primary contact for inquiries regarding program registration and event information via phone and email

– Promptly collects and accurately enters program attendance and registration data in MCD’s Altru database system, updating inconsistencies, missing, or incorrect data

– Assists in tracking of expenses, expenditures and revenue for the education department

– Creates and regularly monitors education department’s supply inventory

– Packs and unpacks education kits/program supplies provided to MCD Educators, docents and volunteers

– Liaises with Education and Programs Manager and Business Director to submit honoraria and programs stipends requests, ensuring that payments are delivered in a timely manner

– Assists in preparation of education department reports for Board and Committee meetings as requested

– Collaborates with Education and Programs Manager and Marketing and PR team to develop content for web, print, email, and social media marketing of programs and events, populating Altru event calendar, Facebook events, and website.

– Coordinates communication of pre-event details and follow-up correspondance between MCD and program collaborators

– Partners with colleagues to provide data and content for sponsorship and grant efforts

– Assists in the development and adherence to best educational practices and departmental policies

– Assists with on-going program and visitor evaluation projects

Additional Responsibilities

– Under the supervision of the Education and Programs Manager, assists in the successful development, recruitment, training, and evaluation of MCD’s docent program, ensuring positive, interactive student and visitor experiences in the galleries

– Recruits and coordinates docents and volunteers for the museum in support of programs and initiatives at the museum and in collaboration with relevant departments

– Actively posts and promotes volunteer opportunities with relevant websites, services, and educational institutions

– Ensures programs requiring volunteers are adequately staffed, provides relevant and detailed information to staff and volunteers in advance of events

– Serves as primary contact for student and student group visits to the museum, responding promptly to inquiries and securing docents to lead tours of the museum

– Organizes and facilitates quarterly volunteer onboarding/appreciation events

– Additional duties as required

Required Skills and Knowledge

– Bachelor’s degree in Art, Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies or related field and 1-3 years experience with non-profit arts education programs, or an equivalent combination of training and experience

– Knowledge of object-based learning, inquiry-based learning, and K-12 curriculum standards a plus

-Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced office

– Possesses excellent written, organizational, speaking, and interpersonal skills

– Highly proficient in the use of computers and software applications, including database management; the ability to learn new applications

– Demonstrated outgoing personality with excellent interpersonal skills

– Possesses positive attitude, initiative, sound judgment, and ability to work independently as well as in team environment
