Director, Water Strategy

MCIO is responsible for delivering over 200 Microsoft web portals, Live and Online Services around the world including infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability. Microsoft Cloud Infrastructure and Operations (MCIO) is the engine that powers Microsoft’s cloud services. The team is responsible for designing, building and operating our unified global datacenters; managing the demand planning and capacity utilization of our unified infrastructure; and all the operations needed to run the physical infrastructure (including supply chain, hardware, power, security, and workflow teams). We focus on smart growth with an emphasis on automation, data driven engineering, cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability. We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s over 200 online businesses including Bing, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform. Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 100 datacenters and 1 million servers. Our portfolio is built and managed by a team of subject matter experts working 24x7x365 to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide.

Microsoft’s MCIO Datacenter Sustainability Team is seeking a highly experienced, outgoing, and self-motivated professional to manage water strategy for our growing fleet of data centers. The Datacenter Sustainable Water Strategy Director will support the continued development and execution of Microsoft’s global water strategy, centered on meeting the operational needs of our datacenters, while reducing our overall global water footprint.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record leading cutting edge water reduction, recycling, and reuse strategies in large commercial or industrial settings, in addition to successfully managing diverse internal and external stakeholders and technical teams to achieve complex, technical goals. The Sustainable Water Director will report to the director of datacenter sustainability at Microsoft

Responsibilities Will Include:

– Collaborating with internal Microsoft datacenter cloud architecture, building design, and operations teams, along with vendor partners, and other external stakeholders to engineer and implement solutions to drive toward MCIO’s water goals, with early focus on communities experiencing water stress.

– Oversee monitoring and reporting of MCIO’s water usage effectiveness (WUE) across all Microsoft data centers and provide guidance to local datacenters’ site management teams to achieve their WUE and sustainability goals.

– Establish and socialize goals, prioritize limited budgets and project work, and implement standardized processes to understand, quantify, report on, and mitigate water risks to Microsoft and the local communities where we operate.

– Work cross-functionally to ensure that existing datacenter cooling systems and future designs meet standards and best practices established by leveraging the data capabilities and technical expertise of Microsoft and its vendors.

– Facilitate the development of solutions to more complex issues, such as the nexus of water and energy in the data centers, and industry/government/NGO efforts to solve watershed-level water stress conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s degree

– 8+ years of related practical experience

Desired:

– Experience managing and working within technical teams with multiple disciplines at the table

– Ability to independently lead multiple stakeholder groups without authority and achieve results

– Strong project management skills are critical, with the ability to manage multiple projects at once, and prioritize work to meet aggressive deadlines

– Experience working in data center environments, including building and operating hyper scale infrastructure

– Strong understanding of industrial mechanical HVAC and water systems

– Deep understanding of water management issues, water quality/treatment, wastewater and/or watershed management

– Experience with program administration, and a demonstrated knack for solving complex, systems-based challenges

– Experience in initiating and executing strategic initiatives in a global environment

– Demonstrated success at publicly representing an organization’s interests and positions to policymakers, NGOs, media and other external stakeholders
