Job Requirements:

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Digital Media Producer will perform all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Digital Media Producer participates in a day-to-day role in the execution of San Diego Zoo Global’s (SDZ Global) digital news and broadcast show strategy; works with the Public Relations/Social Media, Creative Content, and Design teams to ensure content is accurate, and relevant to our viewers. This position reports to the Creative Services Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates in story ideation and development of original content

  • Produces and directs field shoots, and ensures proper lighting and sound recording

  • Shoots, scripts, edits, packages, and publishes news and broadcast show content

  • Gathers and packages relevant content around key stories from a range of sources

  • Reviews content for editorial impact, audience appeal, and timeliness

  • Executes all publishing workflows for video, images, and music

  • Participates in efforts to hit benchmarks for the volume and frequency of digital coverage

  • Works with music library group to identify appropriate music beds for stories and series

  • Records and edits voice-overs for commercials and all other applications

  • Develops web-based video campaigns

  • Performs all pre- and post-production duties

  • Implements LTO archival retrieval and backup

  • Uses non-linear editing (Adobe Premiere Pro)

  • Writes scripts and creates storyboards

  • Provides video fulfillment for all channels

  • Prepares reports

  • Ingests edited productions into video archive, and all metadata

  • Researches and recommends video equipment and related supplies

  • Assures proper maintenance of video equipment

  • Provides video fulfillment support

  • Maintains confidentiality on all projects

  • Adheres to all San Diego Zoo Global and department policies and practices

  • Practices GRRREAT Customer Service Standards

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Possesses excellent news instincts, with the ability to react decisively when developing stories combined with the ability to write succinctly and with flair

  • Researches, schedules, shoots, and edits non-linear format for broadcast and social media, archiving, training, education, on-ground productions, and fund-raising

  • Able to work on multiple tasks and stories simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

  • Works in a team and across all departments and multiple locations, ensuring digital formats that are 100 percent accurate

  • Creates original content for social media, as well as re-edits content for social media and other digital platforms

  • Supports Facebook Live and other live-format shoots

  • Coordinates with project team to make necessary modifications to project scope

  • Coordinates activities with contract video support services

  • Communicates SDZ Global’s mission, vision, philosophy, plans, and intellectual property and media policies, as appropriate

ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field with equivalent specialized training; examples of representative qualifications include considerable experience in video shooting, linear and non-linear editing, and production and broadcast applications; valid California driver license.

Knowledge of:

  • Broadcast news environment

  • Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and blogging

  • Writing, scripts, storyboards, and composition

  • Layout and graphic design

  • Content management systems

  • Studio production and lighting

  • Zoology and conservation issues is desirable

Ability to:

  • Use word processing, desktop publishing, and character generator systems

  • Use digital and analog editing systems and video equipment

  • Switch between multiple styles of production

  • Coordinate a variety of production assignments and details

  • Work both independently and with teams, in a diverse environment

  • Communicate effectively (verbal and written)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Office, broadcast studio, and outdoor environments at Zoo and Safari Park, and field locations; close proximity to animals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Move moderately heavy equipment (approximately 25 to 50 pounds); shoot pictures from various heights (approximately 45 to 55 feet); travel domestically and internationally.
