Digital Media Officer

These positions are located in peace operations in conflict and post-conflict locations. Incumbents typically report to a Head or Deputy Head of a unit or to a Senior Public Information Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Digital Media Officer may be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all officers.)

Development and implementation of digital and/or social media strategies:

  • Ensures implementation of digital communications programs and campaigns to publicize priority issues and/or major events, including drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analysing results;
  • Makes recommendations on the development and delivery of digital media strategies, particularly social media through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification in line with the United Nations’ mandate and related communications strategies and policies;
  • Analyses current events, public opinion and media coverage, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate digital media responses;
  • Monitors, analyses and evaluates implementation and impact of the Mission’s social media presence;
  • Keeps abreast of emerging trends and innovations in the digital media field and makes recommendations for new opportunities to expand or enhance the Mission’s social media presence;
  • Makes recommendations and provides technical advice to team members and other UN components on best practice in digital media;
  • Provides guidance to and may supervise junior staff.

Oversight of content creation and management of digital channels:

  • Manages UN digital and social media platforms, including the mission website, photo, audio and video channels;
  • Coordinates the production and publishing of daily content (text, images, video or HTML) that support and engages audiences in a meaningful way;
  • Works with public information colleagues and other UN components to ensure full coverage of the Mission’s activities and the generation of new content;
  • Ensures consistent messaging, quality control and a coherent user experience across UN digital platforms;
  • Captures and analyses appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices to support continuous improvement.

Engagement and partnerships:

  • Monitors a range of external forums and social media and maintains UN presence in public dialogue where appropriate;
  • Works with staff to engage online audiences through social media platforms;
  • Manages social media communication with supporters and interested parties, building relationships with existing supporters and influencers to build the UN missions’ brand;
  • Develops relationships with key partners to maximize visibility and traffic to UN platforms and to maximise the distribution of UN content;
  • Makes recommendations to increase the visibility of Mission’s social media content.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree with in combination two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area, including at least three years of dedicated experience managing digital channels (website and/or social media) in a professional context is required. Experience delivering digital campaigns, including advocacy and engagement is required.Experience working on issues related to peace and conflict is required. At least 6 months of experience working in conflict, post-conflict or developing country is desirable. Experience monitoring and evaluating the impact of web and social media content is desirable. Experience managing multilingual content is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN secretariat. For this roster vacancy, fluency in English or French is required; working knowledge of the other is required. Working knowledge of an additional UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Core values and competencies will be assessed throughout the evaluation process. This assessment process may include: submission of work samples, video assessment, and/or other skill tests which may be followed by a competency based interview. Please note that language abilities at working knowledge and fluency levels are likely to be assessed as part of this rostering exercise.

Special Notice

The United Nation Secretariat maintains rosters of diverse, qualified and available candidates to fill anticipated job openings in peace operations in the field. The purpose of this job opening is to generate a list of qualified candidates for inclusion in the Public Information Officer P4 roster (job code 5563) with specialized skills in digital and social media work, responding to a growing need for public information work with new media. This is the first time roster candidates with these specific skill sets have been sought at this level.

Please note: The entire assessment process takes an average of six months; all applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application (whether successful or unsuccessful) within 14 days of the conclusion of the process. Successful candidates will be placed on the roster and subsequently will be invited to apply for field mission vacancies open only to roster members. Roster membership does not guarantee selection.
