Designer I

The J. Paul Getty Museum is seeking a limited term Designer I position for our Design department. Under direct supervision develops routine design concepts and solutions to facilitate public engagement and interaction with works of art, the campus, both in public and staff-only spaces. Assists in the definition of project goals, context, scope and strategy. Works closely with project teams and other participants to develop solutions. Creates accurate plans, prototypes, pilots, models, drawings, samples and specifications and suggests methods, materials and techniques throughout the project process.

      • Major Job Responsibilities:

        • Applies basic knowledge of design to routine tasks in area of specialization
        • Assists with the creation of concepts and preparation of presentation materials to communicate design ideas
        • Works on multiple projects concurrently
        • Develops, maintains and archives appropriate project documentation including vendors, materials, specifications and technologies
        • Maintains inventory documentation for graphic panels, labels and material stock
        • Assists in the communication about project progress
        • Prepares information for scheduling and budget quotes
        • Works with outside contractors assigned to projects
        • Working collaboratively, may create graphic communication designs for exhibitions and permanent collection gallery installations including: labels, signs, didactic materials, site enhancements and wayfinding
        • Oversees the production of graphic designs in large and small environmental applications, print and digital forms
        • Working collaboratively may assist in the creation and maintenance of architectural environments, furnishings, and fixtures for the presentation of art and ideas in the gallery, exhibition, and related public, private, program and commerce spaces
        • Under direction may create designs for store products
        • Assists in the creation of storyboards, scripts and the production of A/V environments, and rich media interpretations and experiences to supplement design projects goals
        • Working collaboratively, may assist in the creation of plans, wireframes and architect digital interactive experiences to meet digital signage or interpretive project goals
        • Under direction follows guidelines and applies standards in areas of architectural design, exhibition furniture, interpretive materials, digital communications, micro brands and institutional brands

        Qualifications:

        • Bachelor’s degree in Design
        • 1-3 years of design experience

        Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

        • Competent in software application use in areas of graphic design, 3D design including: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat, FontExplorer, VectorWorks and SketchUp
        • Competent in business software including: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
        • Familiar with software for rich media production including: Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and HTML
        • Familiar with FilemakerPro
        • Basic knowledge of professional printing and construction methods, and familiarity with standard production materials and processes
        • Competent in hand-sketching, drafting, model-making, and basic printing, laminating, and trimming
        • Familiar with industrial design and architectural practices, including life/safety and ADA regulations
        • Familiarity with museum conservation needs and practices
        • Under supervision, organizes and plans projects from start to finish and communicates ideas to a group
        • Ability to work on multiple projects, of different scope, at various stages of development, in a deadline driven work environment
        • Ability to apply best practices in design work
        • Knowledge of art history
