Data Science Intern

Understanding business problem

• Understanding the complex business problem at hand by performing a deep research
• Applying the problem solving skills to break the business problems into different modules and figuring out the underlying hypotheses to test

Designing solution framework

• Design robust and scalable solution frameworks by focusing on each and every module
• Understanding the dependability of these modules w.r.t. other modules or external factors
• Generating dummy outputs and getting a signoff to ensure the business relevancy of the solution framework

Analysis and hypothesis testing

• Create innovative mashups between various relational and non-relational datasets to ensure maximum information gain at initial step
• Performing detailed analysis and testing all the hypotheses
• Using advanced data mining and machine learning techniques to enhance the accuracy of the results

Systems and Application Development

• Converting the promising analysis outcomes into algorithms and testing the robustness, efficiency and scalability of every module
• Stitching all the algorithms together and ensuring a smooth transfer of information (data and insights) without any loss
• Making the system highly automated considering all the scenarios possible
• Testing the overall system and tool for worst case scenarios

Implementation plan and documentation

• Developing a solution implementation plan by chalking out all the technological and infrastructure related pre-requisites
• Implementation plan should have a step-by-step guide to setup the application and potential troubleshooting options
• Developing a detailed documentation of the application and tool. Documentation should have the details around every step of the solution framework including detailed explanation of the algorithms built

• Coursework in computer science or some other technological domain with an interest in Data Science
• Love of drawing pin point conclusions from vast quantities of inconclusive data. Design experiments to answer targeted questions. Conduct exploratory data analysis in high dimensions
• Ability to balance strategic goals with nimble tactical execution in a fast paced environment. Be able to translate human behavior into patterns and extract behavioral patterns from data
• Familiarity with statistics (studying), data munging & scraping (suffering) and visualization (story telling)
• Coding ability and familiarity with Java, C++, or any other OOP language as well as fluency with scripting languages such as Python or PHP. Development experience in the language like "R"
• Experience working with large data sets, experience working with distributed computing tools (Map/Reduce, Hadoop, Hive, etc.). Has worked with a data mining toolkits like WEKA, Mahout, etc. Knowledge of NoSQL databases
• Experience in machine learning methodologies. Comfortable with complex ‘big data’ modeling and manipulation

• Interest in Mathematics and Problem solving
• Interest in deep algorithmic work or distributed systems work in a strong technology environment
• Basic UNIX/Linux skills; experience with programming using R, Python, C/C++, Ruby, SAS
• Experience with Vertica, Greenplum and other large MPP environments very desirable
