Data Center Engineer

The Role

Responsible for administering all aspects of a Data Center’s day-to-day tasks. General duties will include: Hardware Installation and maintenance; Storage-Area-Network (SAN) Administration; Linux Operating System Administration; Configuration of Mail Systems; Network Maintenance; Security, Software Installation, etc.

  • Monitor, analyze and perform capacity planning of floor space, rack space and power utilization.
  • Analyze and determine appropriate layout of all equipment in the data center, accounting for balancing and cooling.
  • Provide installation, support, and maintenance of storage and network devices to industry standards.
  • Understand the engineering design and operational aspects of critical Data Center Infrastructure in order to immediately recognize system issues and respond to operational and emergency situations.
  • Document all device, power and space schematics and maintain document accuracy.
  • Inventory all data center assets for tracking information.
  • Shipping and receiving of all Data Center equipment.
  • Manage protocols on the storage NFS, ISCSI, FCoE
  • Plan for, and respond to, scheduled and unscheduled service outages
  • Must be able quickly and accurately diagnose hardware problems and identify resolution.
  • Support a 24×7 staffing model with on-call shifts that include weekends and holidays
  • Research infrastructure solutions to identify and improve existing processes or enhance overall productivity
  • Position will support other Synacor offices (specifically Westford, MA
  • Some travel to Data Centers required (specifically Columbus, OH)
  • Other duties as assigned

About You

  • 4+ years of experience with server and networking hardware installation and base server configurations.
  • Bachelor of Computer Science preferred
  • Highly proficient with UNIX-based operating systems; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions)
  • Knowledge about managing an Enterprise SAN environment preferred; knowledge of block level access using FC and iSCSI, Director class FC switches in an HA 99.9% uptime environment; Multi-pathing; Knowledge of Linux and driver interaction; NetApp experience and Multi-S N environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts; can configure NFS, key-based ssh; DNS
  • Familiar with basic networking concepts: switching, routing, firewalls, load-balancing at various layers
  • Knowledge with VMware & virtualization technologies.
  • Experience using monitoring and trending tools (Zenoss, Cacti, Nagios).
  • Experience with managing, operating, monitoring backup systems
  • Proficiency in scripting and/or light programming preferred.
  • Experience managing large-scale LAMP environments preferred
  • Experience and familiarity with Cloud services and solutions a plus.
  • Experience with programming languages used for scripting or automation of routine tasks (Bash, Perl, PHP) is an advantage.
  • Certifications such as CCNA, CDCMP, RHCSA or VCP would be highly desirable
  • Travel expectancy 10-15% of the time
