Cuba Manager

The Cuba Manager directs all aspects of protection, science, stewardship and community relations for the Cuba Projects of the Caribbean Division. S/he also serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Cuba Manager establishes the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within the geography of responsibility, defines conservation priorities and long-term conservation strategies, contributes scientific, and technical capacity in the field and develops key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify priorities and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. S/he coordinates the development of innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address effective management of natural system also responding to development needs, engages government agencies and private sector to conserve and protect natural communities and ecosystem services.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

Manages conservation strategies and garners internal and external support for initiatives in Cuba.

Collaborates with regional Caribbean, North America and Global Program staff to support and improve conservation and funding efforts.

Establishes and maintains optimal standards of performance for the program while controlling costs and administering budgets.

Ensures that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.

Builds cooperation with external stakeholders to accomplish program goals, particularly the local government and academic institutions.

Frequently makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.

Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.

Experience developing partnerships (partners, community, government.)

Negotiation experience.

Fluent in Spanish language; written, spoken, and graphical means.

Experience in fundraising.

Politically experienced in partnership development (community, government, and other stakeholders.)

Experience working in Cuba and with Cuban public organizations and civil society.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree and 5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.

Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.

Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
