DESCRIPTION

The Florida Department of Health is seeking an experienced public health professional to serve as the lead public health official of the Florida Department of Health in Marion County. This position serves over one of the 67 county health departments in the State of Florida. Responsibilities include the direction and supervision of a wide variety of health programs including, but not limited to, environmental, nursing, chronic disease, preparedness and response, dental health, family planning, communicable disease, and vital statistics.

The position requires extensive experience in the management and administration of public health programs, essential public health services, health policy issues, public health advocacy, and working with elected officials, governmental bodies, community partners, and the media. Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of fiscal and budget management, human resource management, information systems, and a demonstrated capacity to lead an organization through a continuous quality management process.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A master’s degree is required at a minimum for this position. Preference will be given to a public health professional with a master’s degree in Public Health or other health sciences, or a master’s degree and extensive public health experience. Physicians that currently hold, or are eligible for, a Florida Medical license (Chapters 458 or 459, Florida Statutes ) are encouraged to apply.

A qualified candidate is a senior executive with a passion for public health and prevention with extensive experience in core public health practices and principles. The candidate will have a commitment to effective management, team leadership, decisiveness, and community engagement. The candidate has to demonstrate superior leadership, cultural and interpersonal skills. This position requires extensive knowledge and use of quality management tools and methods.

Preference will be given to those candidates with a senior leadership background and executive management experience. Candidates must be committed to providing the highest quality of service to the people of Marion County. This must be accomplished largely through personal impact and influence, team work, interpersonal communication, collaboration, and negotiation.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Florida Department of Health is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops polices and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services.

The Florida Department of Health in Marion County provides services to all of the county’s residents and visitors and is responsible for assessing, maintaining, and improving the health and safety of the entire community within the county as an essential part of the Florida Department of Health. The lead public health official for the Florida Department of Health in Marion County will be responsible for over 200 full time staff and an annual budget in excess of $12 million.

The Florida Department of Health in Marion County is located is located in Ocala, Florida and provides services to families, individuals, and visitors of all ages in the county including to:

• Prevent epidemics and the spread of disease

• Protect against environmental hazards

• Prevent injuries

• Promote and encourage healthy behaviors

• Respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery efforts

• Assure the quality and accessibility of health services

A wide variety of professional and paraprofessional staff provide services within the above program areas. These include Board Certified Physicians, Dentists, Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses, Dieticians, Epidemiologists, Social Workers, and various other health care workers and disease intervention/environmental specialists.

This is executive level work planning, directing, or coordinating activities in medicine and health services in hospitals, clinics, public health agencies, or in administrative health functions.
