Corporate Banking Associate

The Portfolio Risk Management Associate will support Corporate Banking professionals in executing the first line of defense accountability for strong risk culture through further integrating reporting and analysis into management of the business. Portfolio Risk Management assists Corporate Banking leadership by providing robust portfolio-wide multidimensional analysis.

ACCOUNTABILITIES DEFINED
Portfolio Analytics
  • Strong understanding of the lending business, credit risk and implications of economic and industry dynamics on portfolio risk. Apply concepts to portfolio risk management.
  • Deliver thoughtful, distilled portfolio analysis with succinct commentary for Executive Management and senior leadership to enhance risk management of the portfolio on tight timelines. Robust portfolio analytics includes identification of trends, correlations and root causes across multiple credit metrics, including:
    • Capital/risk weighted assets, risk/return, weighted average probability of default (WAPD) and loss given default.
    • Risk rating migrations, problem loan accounts
    • Exceptions, concentrations, repayment dependencies, early warning indicators, covenants/triggers, etc.
    • Actual performance metrics vs established risk tolerance thresholds
  • Effectively communicate and interact with corporate bankers across all levels to understand risk issues in support of portfolio-wide reviews and individual account issue identification.
  • Collaborate with other LOBs and Risk on Enterprise initiatives
    • Draw on knowledge and experience to generate ideas to solve current risk and regulatory issues facing the Bank (e.g. Heightened Standards)
    • Ability to represent Corporate Bank in various working groups
  • Data Management:
    • Knowledge of BMO internal book of record systems and their database infrastructure
    • Daily usage of data analytic tools (OLAP – online analytical platform “Cube”, Spotfire, NSBI- Microsoft business intelligence, Excel)
    • Ability to define and report on portfolio through different views as it relates to various purposes (i.e. risk view, management view, accounting view)
    • Monitor data quality for senior management and regulators
    • Participate in Data Governance working groups to develop data lineage and data quality rules
  • Develop and build on systematic and sustainable processes to enhance data collection for reporting.
  • Manage and monitor available liquidity across established liquidity limits. Respond to liquidity clearance requests in a timely manner through the CLP.

Regulatory and Internal Audit Coordination

  • Coordinate compilation of requested information for exams

  • Liaise with Portfolio Managers and Enterprise Risk as required

  • Track status of exam deliverables and follow-up as needed

  • Observe regulatory meetings and assist with identifying themes.

Special Projects

  • Lead collection and validation of relevant information for portfolio-related initiatives

  • Prepare ad-hoc reports/queries from internal systems

  • Develop and present targeted training to Corporate Bank, as needed

Qualifications

Knowledge :
  • An undergraduate degree in finance, economics, or accounting.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Proficient in multiple data platforms
  • General knowledge of corporate banking products and processes
  • Typically individuals continue in an Associate capacity between 3-5 years with growing responsibility.
Skills :
  • Exceptional skills in quantitative analytics and credit analysis.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office applications including PowerPoint and Excel and other analytical platforms for executive management reporting
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work in dynamic environment and adhere to multiple and aggressive deadlines
  • Ability to be creative, insightful, and resourceful in performance of duties
