Coral Strategy Director, Caribbean Division

The Coral Strategy Director (CSD) for the Caribbean Division is responsible for the overall planning, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive program to restore coral reefs in the Caribbean. S/he will apply the full range of coral biology and conservation tools, including those related to ecology and evolution of corals applicable to protection, restoration, and threat mitigation. The CSD also leads and/or supports cooperative projects with scientific and academic partners, regional, national, and local governments, conservation organizations and other partners as appropriate. The CSD reports to the Executive Director of the Caribbean Division.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The CSD is responsible for implementing and achieving the coral conservation priorities of TNC’s Caribbean Division by overseeing and representing TNC in relationships and negotiations with current and prospective partners, government agencies and advisory committees. S/he works closely and coordinates with a wide variety of TNC staff, private individuals, scientific and academic institutions, public entities and corporations in support of coral restoration conservation goals. S/he assists with speaking engagements and donor field trips and assists in private and public fundraising as necessary. The CSD is an expert in coral biology/ecology and conservation techniques and resources. S/he advises TNC staff and partners on the application of these tools for the advancement of coral conservation and restoration.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Direct and indirect oversight of staff working toward accomplishment of Caribbean Division’s coral conservation goals.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently and on short notice, sometimes on weekends.
  • Negotiate transactions, which can bind TNC legally and financially.
  • Plan and direct work on conservation projects; recruit and supervise staff and interns as needed or as funding is available.
  • Resolve complex problems independently with minimal supervision.
  • Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in natural resources management, conservation, business, law or another related field of study and at least 5 years’ experience in marine/land conservation, real estate, law, business or related field.
  • Experience working with a wide range of people, such as scientists, corporate and non-profit executives and government officials.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in developing and managing multiple projects and timelines.
  • Experience working with computers, including database management.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated, especially in the Caribbean.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant area (e.g., ecology, evolution, geology, oceanography) and demonstrated expertise and experience working with corals.
  • Knowledge of current trends and strategies in coral biology/ecology, conservation, and land protection.
  • Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to summarize disparate information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated ability in data analysis, project design, and evaluation of activities.
  • Ability to create work plans based on higher-level goals.
  • Oral and written communication skills to deal effectively with mid and high level partner contacts, the host government, and the local communities.

Term: We currently anticipate that the need and/or funding for this position will end on June 30, 2019.
