Computer Science Intern

The City of Gainesville Regional Utilities Customer Operations Project Management Office (PMO) Division currently has an opening for a qualified Intern to join our team to perform various tasks related to automated and computerized systems. The ideal intern will have a background in a computer and information sciences related field and have the flexibility and willingness to tackle any assignment.

A typical work day may include:

  • Analyzing and maintaining departmental automated/computerized systems
  • Evaluating and documenting software needs.
  • Produce data, information and reports based on requests.
  • Correct program errors or make modifications to departmental automated/computerized systems by revising coded instructions or altering the sequence of operations
  • Develop and write computer programs for input and retrieval of specific documents, data, and information
  • Configure departmental software applications and servers to ensure high availability
  • Design user interfaces
  • Working with various different technologies such as SAP, SQL Server Integration Services, FileMaker and Microsoft .NET Web Application Frame Work
  • Assist with other tasks as identified by Customer Operations PMO staff

  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • To be eligible for a City of Gainesville Internship, you must be currently enrolled in an institution of higher education and possess at least a 2.0 GPA
  • Must be pursuing a degree with major course work in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Information Science, or other related field.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • A student in the sophomore level or above
  • Have relevant work experience in Information Technology, Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Information Science or other related field.
  • Have previous experience as an intern or in a co-op program
  • Microsoft Office experience, specifically Excel and Word expertise
  • SAP experience preferred
  • Excellent letter writing skills, including grammar and punctuation
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Programming knowledge and experience
  • Willingness and flexibility to take on new challenges.

  • Notes:

  • Student must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. Preferably 12-20 hours a week in (3-8 hour) blocks of time.
  • Student must be available to work at least a minimum of two consecutive semesters. One (1) year is preferred
