Community Relations Manager

Role Summary
The Community Relations Manager directs aspects of highly visible and complex projects that positively impact corporate giving and community relations in the lower 48 states. This role negotiates project objectives and direction, with the Managing Director defining the scope and ensuring resources are aligned toward execution. The role of Community Relations Manager is a visible and critical part of the community relations outlook, defining positioning and view in our communities externally and internally.

Scope & Complexity

  • This position supports external community relations and corporate giving activities for Alaska Air Group (AAG) and its subsidiaries.

Key Duties

  • Conceptualizes the immediate and long-range needs of community relations with respect to the project mission and understanding of business objectives as they relate to project goals.
  • Translates needs into formulated vision and long term roadmaps, providing strategic alignment for projects and initiatives to be executed.
  • Devotes approximately 30-40% of the time representing Alaska at after-hours (e.g., nights and weekends), external relations and non-profit events.
  • Conducts research and analysis to make recommendations and support decision making.
  • Negotiates project objectives and direction with the Managing Director Community Relations.
  • Negotiates with external agencies and nonprofit organizations for sponsorship and recognition benefits.
  • Champions the development and maintenance of intake community relations applications and reporting technology across functional roles throughout the organization.
  • Evaluates donation requests making determination of position (e.g., decline or accept), followed by activation of all deliverables.
  • Prepares statistical reports on corporate giving company-wide.
  • Prepares the department budget, tracks spending and variances, forecasts and reports on operational and giving budgets and effectively communicate objectives, status updates, and issues with all stakeholders.
  • Measures and analyzes dollars spent for results in the community (e.g., number of students involved in a program supported by Alaska) and reports on sustainability metrics.
  • Oversees the community giving message and giving guidelines on Alaska’s landing pages, effectively telling our story through the web pages and blog stories.
  • Manages the Charity Miles program.
  • Represents Alaska at meaningful community events where we have sponsored or participated in with donations.
  • Prepares the annual reports for IRS tax receipts.
  • Oversees disaster plan implementation by partnering with non-profit groups to provide disaster relief transportation and communicates with internal and external groups for maximum awareness of our support.

Job-Specific Skills

  • Required
  • A minimum of 5 years of work experience in philanthropic and/or community relations field.
  • Exposure to project planning, cost benefit analysis, and information systems.
  • Industry and professional cross-sector collaboration and experience.
  • Professional, reliable, enthusiastic, self-reliant, and self-motivated.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure at all levels of the organization and with external constituencies.
  • Strong customer or relationship management ability.
  • Overall knowledge of database software management.
  • Strong strategic thinking capabilities with business acumen and political savvy.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate appropriately at all levels of the organization and with external constituencies.
  • Solid prioritization skills, with a customer focus.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree is required.
