Pay Rate: $49, 549 – $68,823 annually , FLSA non-exempt, Union represented.

Schedule: Forty (40) hours per week. Schedule is Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Schedule is subject to change. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, substitute for other staff, and attend meetings.

Position Summary:

Writes, edits, and proofreads, communications materials for internal and external audiences; assists with public events and public event planning; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Relationships:

Reports to the Marketing and Communications Director; no supervisory responsibility is exercised.

Essential Functions:

Class specifications are intended to provide a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

  • Delivers high-quality, customer-focused services.
  • Researches, writes, edits, and proofreads various types of print and digital communications materials. Prepares materials for internal and external audiences, such as, but not limited to flyers, posters, brochures, enewsletters, email blasts, and news releases.
  • Monitors and ensures all communications content maintains compliance with established Library style guidelines and content standards.
  • Assists with public events and public event planning.
  • Peruses media publications to find relevant Library related information.
  • Serves as social media backup.
  • Collates public opinion research surveys and responses.
  • Keeps relevant and up-to-date with industry standards and trends.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and regular and consistent attendance.
  • Brings matters of public concern regarding waste, inefficiency, corruption, discrimination, and safety to the attention of Library Management.
  • Accurately communicates the Library’s policies to members of the public in all job-related contacts.
  • Positively reflects Pierce County Library’s mission, vision, and values to members of the public and to staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Comprehensive understanding of modern methods of communications principles, practices, and standards.
  • General office equipment, computers, Windows-based software, Microsoft Suite.
  • Marketing and social media.
  • Associated Press Style.
  • Using social media.
  • Customer service standards and protocols.
  • Preferred experience working with an email communications system.
  • Preferred experience with photography and/or videography.

Required Skill in:

  • Professional writing, proofreading, and editing principles.
  • Performing a variety of communications functions.
  • Proofreading communications material and ensuring compliance with style guidelines.
  • Strong organizational skills, able to multi-task and set priorities.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Flexible and able to work effectively with deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Mass Media, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field, and two years communications experience; OR any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skills and allows successful performance of the job.

Licenses, Certifications, and Special Requirements:

  • A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.
  • Must pass local police and Washington State Adult/Child Abuse records check prior to hire.
  • The ability to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule and to adapt to schedule changes.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment, with some work performed in a print production environment and involves exposure to machinery with moving parts, noise from equipment operation, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Subject to sitting, standing for extended periods of time, walking, bending, reaching, crouching, climbing ladders, and lifting of objects weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted or 50 pounds with assistance.
