Communications Specialist

  • Plans, develops, and produces creative, high-quality content for college audiences (e.g., faculty, staff, students, donors, prospective students, and the general public) using multiple media and tools.
  • Advises Department Chairs, Program Directors, and other decision makers on effective communications and potential relevance of content for external public relations interest.
  • Participates in strategic communications planning for college projects and initiatives.
  • Produces all aspects including design and content editing of alumni and internal college newsletters, brochures, mailers, advertising e-newsletters, presentations, web content, and press releases and annual reports.
  • Supports the communication needs including writing, graphic design and website updates of the college’s departments and programs; especially as they relate to development, recruitment, and student services activities.
  • Interfaces with project leads/managers, team members and key stakeholders in order to promote the activities of faculty and alumni through photography, design and layout of publications, promotional items and websites.
  • Oversees content for the website; ensure timeliness of all information, and coordinate content updates with departments, programs, and other units.
  • Schedule, edit and support photo and video shoots in alignment with strategic goals of college and departments.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, Education or a related field AND four (4) years of related work experience in the development of comprehensive and creative communication; OR Eight (8) years of related work experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. Certificates from recognized programs that verify mastery of tools and techniques relevant to the assignment may substitute for up to six (6) months of experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience translating complex and technical subjects/stories for a general audience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of marketing practices and principles.
  • Experience with graphic design concepts and publication layout.
  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, specifically Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Experience working with Google docs and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with social media channels (Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, flickr and Facebook).
  • Experience in taking and processing photos for online and publication use.
  • Experience in strategic communication planning.
  • Experience in principles, concepts, and practices of project management.
  • Experience in communication assessment, editing, research, and summary.
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication, and oral/written/media presentation.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, staff, teams, and community members.
  • Experience in working with a variety of constituents.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with internal and external committees, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Experience in demonstrating research, publication, and presentation.

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking. Use office equipment including a desktop computer. Lift up to 20 pounds. Clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
