Collections Technician – G12

Performs delinquent account collection functions to recover monies owed to the government; notifies customers by mail or telephone to secure payment for city services; contacts insurance companies for payment of ambulance fees. Collects, records, and maintains data necessary for the collection of city receivables. Researches customers to obtain correct account information. Prepares necessary documentation including liens against properties for lot clearings and demolitions and proof of claim paperwork for bankruptcies and returned checks. Negotiates payment arrangements by telephone or in person; records information for future reference; responds to requests for information from the public by mail or telephone. Receives and analyzes all correspondence regarding monies owed; processes and records new insurance information, paperwork from Bankruptcy Court, and requests from attorneys for information. Posts monies to appropriate accounts. Prints and mails daily ambulance bills to customers and insurance claims to the correct company. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws regarding the collection of taxes and other revenues. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Knowledge of real estate proceedings for property liens. Knowledge of insurance forms and filing procedures. Knowledge of HIPPA regulations. Skill in utilizing financial computer software programs. Skill in problem solving and decision making. Skill in gathering and analyzing complex data. Skill in operating standard office equipment. Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements:

Ability to read, writes, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Physical Requirements:

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and climbs ladders. The work is typically performed in an office setting.
