Chemical Engineer Intern

SUMMARY:

Entry level technical position with true responsibilities day one and charged with developing new products and processes to expand or improve Arlon’s product lines. Work is done with the guidance of senior chemists, engineers, and the Product Development Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Conducts research to identify and develop new and improved high performance cast and calendered vinyl films, adhesives, primers, release liners, and topcoats. The development process includes identification of new product components and raw materials, optimization of formulations and processes, and planning, monitoring, and evaluating results of experimental manufacturing trials from initial laboratory feasibility studies through scale-up and into standard production.
  • Evaluates alternate or replacement raw materials to ensure an ongoing supply of raw materials for all products.
  • Modifies products in the Graphics product lines to improve product performance, productivity, and cost.
  • Project activity performed will be at a low level of difficulty and complexity.
  • Determines new product requirements by coordinating with Project / Marketing Managers, senior chemists and engineers, the Product Development Manager, and others in the organization. Participates in outside Alpha and Beta Site testing to monitor success of products and to gain additional information on customer requirements and the needs of the marketplace.
  • Develops specifications, test methods, standard operating procedures, and other controlled documents as required.
  • Works with vendors and equipment manufacturers, and surveys recent literature, to stay current on state-of-the-art materials and processes.
  • Manages individual projects to achieve results within the established time frame. Develops appropriate documentation, transition documents, and reports to comprehensively communicate project status. Prepares data for Data Review Meetings and Gate Meetings, and contributes in these meetings to reach consensus on future direction of projects.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

BS in Polymer Science / Chemistry / Chemical Engineering or related field.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Excellent communication skills required. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with people at all levels of the organization and with vendors and customers. Must have the ability to organize and present data in a clear, concise, and understandable format.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Basic mathematics and statistics required.
