Campus Security Officer

This position exists to create and maintain a safe and secure environment, monitor safety and security concerns, and is the contact person for emergency personnel at Minneapolis Community and Technical College buildings and surrounding property. Provides lead work direction for a shift that consists of Student Safety Monitors.

Minneapolis Community and Technical College is one of the largest and most diverse two-year colleges in Minnesota, serving more than 12,000 students annually in credit and noncredit programs. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of experience as a Security Patrol Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, or Peace Officer.
  • Associate’s degree in Law Enforcement, Paralegal or related field may substitute for 1 year of experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in above areas may substitute for two (2) years of experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Loss prevention techniques sufficient to ensure the safety of students, staff and the general public using campus facilities.
  • Applicable city ordinances, State of Minnesota and federal criminal and civil statutes, e.g., Clery Act, sufficient to ensure the campus provides enforcement within their legal authority.
  • Traffic control procedures and parking regulations sufficient to oversee the patrol of campus facilities and grounds.
  • Possess knowledge of standard police practices including investigation techniques and procedures, citizen’s arrest power, loss prevention techniques, intrusion alarms, detection, surveillance systems, and fire alarms.
  • Mechanical aptitude sufficient to recognize and to temporarily control mechanical emergencies until skilled physical plant personnel can be called in.
  • Good written and oral communication skills are essential for interviewing witnesses, victims, suspects, and defusing conflicts and violent situations.
  • Individual must have above average ability to deal with the public and students in normal and adverse situations.
  • Must be able to operate a two-way radio with phone answering capabilities, and follow FCC guideline in usage.
  • Must be able to make timely effective decisions without supervision.
  • Demonstrates an effort to improve cultural competence and actively takes steps to include diversity training in professional development.
  • Knowledge of Right-to-Know, Occupational Safety (OSHA) and Data Privacy Act.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to run and walk long distances.


Additional Requirements

This position requires successful completion of the following:

  • Must be able to pass FBI/BCA background check free from convictions or felony and/or misdemeanor violations.

In accordance with the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities (MnSCU) Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to MnSCU’s vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
