Breeding Agronomist (2 roles available – 2002642) – Minot, ND

Where the Chemistry Happens

We are seeking Breeding Agronomists like you to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and evaluating small plot breeding field trials in the North Dakota region for the purpose of delivering high quality data for statistical analysis and selection. The goal or our breeding program is to develop and register new hybrid varieties of B. juncea and B. napus (canola) for the North American market. The North American oilseeds breeding program is based out of Saskatoon, SK, Canada, and this role will be accountable to the InVigor Breeder responsible for yield trialing operations across western Canada and northern US.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure all trial activities are under stringent management for delivering high level evaluation, to be utilized in statistical analysis and in-depth selection.

Responsibility for trial activities like producing field plans, randomizations, field books, accurate record keeping, statistical analysis of agronomic and quality data for trial report (when required) and labeling.

Management and agronomy of seeding to harvesting activities such as location identification and preparation, pest and stress diagnosis, disease identification, field notes and observation, maintaining isolation requirements, tissue sampling, off type and pollination management.

Participate in the North American breeding seed setup to ensure all protocol are completed and ready for spring planting in a timely fashion

Prepare breeding material and participate in winter nursery (contra) when required

Manage resources with the goal of achieving all breeding objectives and effective operation of the program which involves equipment maintenance, inventory and management of summer students.

Execute seed quality analysis (NIR) and liaise with lab to ensure accurate seed quality data

Support QA/QMS in activities as required by the breeding program

Establish and maintain industry presence and ensure that BASF is up to date on current industry activities by participating in meetings and establishing contacts with external parties.

Formula for Success

  • Degree in Agriculture or related discipline
  • Experience in plant breeding, genetics, canola agronomy, canola botany, pollen flow, genetic purity, conducting research trials using statistical design and analysis are all assets.
  • Competent in troubleshooting farm and small plot research equipment
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to be flexible and modify plans as required to minimize impact on data and production as situations arise.
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team either as a member or supervising contract employees is required in fulfilling job responsibilities
  • A valid driver’s license required
