Title : Biomedical Engineer

Location : Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) Bethesda, MD.

Type of Position : Contract – Two (2) year contract position.

Positions Available : One (1) Full-Time (40 hours per week) position available.

The successful candidate will report to the On-Site Supervisor and Human Resources at our corporate office. Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Responsible for applying intensive/expert and diversified knowledge of advanced engineering practices and principles, design, ability and skills, and medical and biological knowledge and principles to complex multi-disciplinary patient care through digital design, computer manufacturing techniques, CPU control boards and wiring. In addition, develops the overall goals, objectives, priorities, and deadlines for the Simulation Department training programs.
  • Maintain competency by reviewing literature, attending conferences, meetings and professional courses, and through individual contact with similar facilities, both government and non-government. Presents technical papers before national, professional, and other groups/organizations for the purpose of presenting results, outcomes, and accomplishments of projects.
  • Under the guidance of the Medical Director, Department of Simulation overseas simulation diagnostic troubleshooting and repair for non-functioning training units training assisting with execution of medical simulation training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
  • Works under the general supervision of the Simulation Programs Manager who sets overall objectives. Develops deadlines, projects, and work to be done. Where two or more projects are involved, the Contractor may assign priorities.
  • The purpose of the work is to plan and carry out projects and evaluate technical repair procedures and processes to improve the efficiency and productivity of the Simulation Center, and assist the Medical Director and other personnel in order to maintain the medical equipment used throughout the center, WRNMMC and its DHA partners. The work involves identifying problems, collecting and analyzing information and making recommendations concerning the efficiency and productivity of the overall timely replacement of technical training equipment within the Simulation Center.
  • The result of this work ensures reduced learner and patient risk thus providing a reduction in cost of procedures and training. Contacts are with physicians, nurses, interns and residents, and personnel from the Automation Management Office, Facilities Maintenance Division, Logistics, Medical Maintenance, Resource Management Division, and Command Group. Contacts are with vendors for the estimation and quoting of center equipment/supplies.
  • The purpose of the contacts is to obtain or exchange factual information, to provide recommendations on technical issues and to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts. Contacts are also to influence managers to accept and implement findings and recommendations on Simulation Center improvement or effectiveness. Some recommendations may encounter resistance due to organizational conflict, competing objectives, or resource problem. Guidelines consist of procedural guidance from the Army’s Central Simulation Committee consisting of Directors of Medical Education and appointed Medical Directors and Specialty Advisors to develop criteria that is proven useful. The guidelines include a standardized curriculum. Guidelines are not always completely applicable to specific work assignments. Uses judgment in choosing, interpreting, or adapting available guidelines to specific assignments.
  • Formulate monthly reports on production, inventory, quality improvement initiatives and training to the Medical Director, Simulation Department, WRNMMC.
  • Plans and carries out assignments in accordance with accepted policies and applicable precedents, resolving most conflicts that arise. Keeps the service chiefs informed of progress and potentially controversial findings or problems with widespread impact. Completed work is reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of effectiveness in meeting requirements and practically of recommendations.
  • Assists with resolving technical issues with simulation training equipment ranging from computerized task trainers and robotic patient mannequins to highly sophisticated virtual reality medical simulators.
  • Ensure that personnel adhere to the Centers Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) especially regarding the proper use of simulators and supporting equipment.
  • Writes and updates the SOPs.
  • Tracks and reports troubleshooting, repair logs, and overall simulator functionality to the Medical Director and ensures that all conditions and actions necessary to produce desired results are considered.
  • Researches simulation technology and provides Medical Director with the findings.
  • Provide advice and assistance to services on matters concerning the application and utilization of all types of training simulators.
  • Responsible for providing monthly reports to the Simulation Programs Manager on Center for budget issues concerning the repairs of simulation and biomedical equipment.
  • Assist in initiating and maintaining appropriate documentation for budget request.
  • Responsible for data collection paperwork and justification for purchases of new simulation technology. Monitors and documents simulation use by obtaining training information.
  • Maintains a file of past and cumulative usage.
  • Assist and utilizes databases for acquiring, maintaining, and tracking simulation equipment/supplies and for the turn-in of equipment /supplies.
  • Adheres to the hand receipt policies at the appropriate Military Training Facility (MTF). Communicates with the Simulation Programs Manager and Logistics to understand purchasing and funding requirements.
  • Assist and /or arranges for calibration and repair for simulators/equipment and arranges for maintenance of all instrumentation and equipment associated with each simulator.
  • Responsible for problem solving on all simulators/equipment and coordinates with supporting activities such as Automation Management Organization, Facilities Management Department, Biomed, Logistics, and Audio/Visual.
  • Available to departmental representatives for participation in development and conducting of research protocols related to best practices of the training equipment.
  • Participates in the research and viability of new simulation technology.
  • Attends national conferences and arranges demonstrations of new simulation technology. Maintains professional contact with all MTF personnel, vendors, visitors to the Center.
  • Promotes the MTF Simulation Center by providing informational tours for internal/external persons interested in the Centers usage of training equipment and the types of training activities.

Required Qualifications :

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Three to five (3-5) years’ experience in working with, repairing and troubleshooting biomedical equipment.
  • Three (3) or more years’ experience in working with, repairing and troubleshooting medical simulators (robotic patients and virtual reality simulators)
  • Work requires knowledge of the Navy and Army’s MTFs policies and procedures in order to assist with coordinating simulation training and purchasing supplies requests.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, simulation technology and ability or aptitude to learn simulation software in order to participant and understand training, and generate useful recommendations concerning simulation training.
  • Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing. The work requires to write justifications for purchases assist in justifications for personnel and communicate in writing to the Simulation Programs Manager and other MTF organizations.
  • Must possess the ability to multi-task and work in an environment with constant interruptions and reorganization.
  • Knowledge of the shipping/receiving process and the ability to track simulation equipment that has been returned to vendors for repair or maintenance.
  • Practical knowledge of audio-visual in order to support the Simulation Centers Audio-Visual (AV) requirements such as Digital Light Projects and video camera or the ability and desire to learn.
  • Must be computer literate and possess the ability to learn new simulations software easily.
  • Mastery of, and skill in applying, expertise in advanced engineering theories, principles, concepts, standards, and methods sufficient to apply experimental theories and/or new applications or developments to extend or modify theories, concepts, and assumptions; resolve unique or novel problems, conditions, or issues; or significantly alter standard practices, equipment, devices, processes, and known techniques.

Shall be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

  • Must be a United States (US) Citizen.

Salary : $35.64 per hour plus health and wellness benefits of $4.27 per hour. Hours of work will be from 7:00a.m. — 4:00p.m. Monday through Friday, as needed by the on-site supervisor. Candidate will work 40 hours per week.

Testing Requirements : Candidates chosen for consideration must be able to successfully complete a government background screening.
