Behavioral Health Psychiatric Emergency Services Technician

The Psychiatric Emergency Services Technician provides patient and family focused care as part of the health care team in accordance with the SCHS mission, philosophy, policies and procedures and within the parameters established by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities:
(May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned)

Participates in code gray interventions as needed.

Manages daily workings of the PES unit including answering phones, providing patient assistance, faxing paperwork, maintaining the whiteboard, monitoring supplies, providing patient care hygiene, auditing charts and serving meals.

Provides a thorough search of patient belongings, documenting in the inventory and placing it in the appropriate storage area for each item. Assists nursing staff in patient search, including thoroughly searching the patients clothing.

Monitors and supervises activities of PES patients communicating observations in a timely and effective manner, verbally and in writing, to other members of the Treatment Team. Documents information in a timely manner demonstrating compliance with department standards including 15 minute checks, hourly rounds, seclusion and restraint.

Listens effectively.

Gives clear directions and reinforces teaching to patients and families regarding basic health care needs.

Transports patients and specimens safely and effectively.

Prepares patient areas after use (i.e. cleaning and restocking).

Additional duties as assigned, including EKG.

Promotes patient’s independence, respects privacy, and maintains patients rights to decide about care and reports findings.

Maintains competency in supportive care for the Psychiatric Emergency Services Department operates equipment safely, properly and carries out nursing orders within the scope of practice for your certification.

Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the health system’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violations of applicable rules, and copperating fully with all company investigations and proceedings.

Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficiant and accurate.

Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Higher education and/or continued education in the area of Psychology preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: CNA2 with the Oregon State Board of Nursing or EMT-B Certification required.

Personal Protective Equipment: Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

Experience: Previous healthcare or EMT experience preferred. Desire to work with mental health patients preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Continually (75% or more): Standing and walking, keyboard operation, use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.

Frequently (50%): Sitting, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-25 pounds. The use and operation of a motor vehicle for Home Health and Wound Caregivers.

Occasionally (25%): Bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), reaching overhead, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 25-50 pounds, grasping/squeezing, ability to hear whispered speech level.

Rarely (10%): Climbing stairs.

Never (0%): Climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), operation of a motor vehicle.

Exposure to Elemental Factors

Rarely (10%): Wet/slippery area, chemical solution.

Never (0%): Heat, cold, noise, dust, vibration, uneven surface.
