Battery Management Systems Design and Test Engineer: This position will work with business units across Medtronic and with the battery management system team to design battery management systems, battery charging systems and power supplies as necessary; and work together with selected suppliers to ensure the development of high reliability power sources for a wide range of medical devices. The desired candidate will have demonstrated experience battery pack management design as well as board layout skills. Experience with lithium-ion cells is a plus. This position will reside in the Energy Systems Research and Technology group and will work closely with a highly qualified and motivated team of engineers and scientists.

A Day in the Life:
This position will be responsible for the design and test of rechargeable battery pack management systems for specific medical device applications.
o Design battery management systems, including circuit schematics and layout.
o Design power supplies and/or work with established suppliers to review power source design.
o Be responsible for adoption and/or development of battery charger technology.
  • Effectively partner with and leverage existing subject matter experts within the Medtronic businesses who already have significant experience with BMS design, power source design, fuel gauge development and other related technologies.
  • Implement best practices designs for safe and reliable operation – charging and discharging of the battery pack.
  • Establish and maintain electrical calibration, programming , and testing equipment for configuring and evaluating battery management systems and fuel gauges.
  • Write plans, reports, data analysis summaries and other required documentation consistent with quality system requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of current battery transportation regulations.

Must Have: Minimum Qualifications
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or other similar discipline with at least two years of relevant experience (higher level education may substitute for some experience).
Specialized Knowledge or Skills Required:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of battery management system design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of automated battery test equipment.
  • Experience with configuring and testing battery management circuits / systems.
  • Cadence board layout work for battery management systems.
  • Familiarity with statistical tools, DOEs and packages such as JMP / Minitab
  • Familiarity with DFSS or DRM tools (such as VOC, FMEA, 5-Why, 8-D)
  • High energy and self-motivated
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong technical communication skills (written and verbal)
Nice to Have:
  • Experience with Li-ion battery technology
  • Experience with battery fuel gauge technology & configuration
  • Experience in working with suppliers
  • Medical device industry experience; quality system understanding or other experience working in a regulated environment.
