Our products are more than the sum of their parts, but the parts are pretty important too. We’re seeking a mechanical designer to develop basic mechanical designs and use CAD software to model basic parts in a team-oriented environment. Must have an understanding of math, science and physics and be able to apply spatial skills.

We’re looking for a Mechanical Designer 1
for our Aviation team at our headquarters in the greater Kansas City area. In this role you will be responsible for developing and designing test plans for basic mechanical systems and conducting testing of products to verify compliance with design requirements. Other essential functions include:

  • Model basic parts and components including injection molded plastic, die cast aluminum and zinc, sheet metal, CNC machined and screw machine fabricated parts, compression molded rubber, extrusions, display components, flex circuits, touch panels, speaker enclosures, mounting systems, etc.
  • Specify requirements for and source parts such as electrical connectors, speakers, microphones, LCD’s, backlights, keypads, switches, electric motors, screw machined parts, rotary controls, batteries and antennas
  • Interface with Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and toolmakers for discussion of basic designs.
  • Maintain configuration control of documentation for products in production and interface with available drafting and document control resources
  • Applies design standards and procedures to implement basic designs
  • Learns how to use and apply engineering tools relevant for performing the essential functions of this job description
  • Thoroughly documents work in an organized manner
  • Works collaboratively and professionally in a team environment with other Garmin associates to achieve goals
  • Accepts and acts on constructive criticism

Qualifications

Qualified candidates possess a Two Year Technical Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology AND a minimum of 1 years of relevant experience. Other requirements include:

  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Previous work or internship experience in design, particularly for consumer products and working in a team environment is highly preferred!
