Associate Designer

The Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books for Young Readers Franchise group is seeking an Associate Designer to join the design team. The ideal candidate is extremely organized and has excellent communication skills. The Associate Designer will be responsible for the design of 20-30 titles per year in a variety of formats including early readers, board books, and media tie-in books. The Associate Designer will manage these titles through the various stages of production, from the early stages of creation to final product, with guidance from the Art Director.

The Associate Designer will also be responsible for

  • Providing design support to the Art Director and franchise design team as needed
  • Managing the Franchise design team contracts
  • Preparing jacket, cover, and interior files for the printer
  • Keeping titles on schedule and updating the status of each title in the Design status report
  • Researching and staying on top of design trends in the children’s book industry
  • Participating in design and interdepartmental meetings
  • Occasional photo and illustration research
  • Working collaboratively with editorial and production groups

Requirements

  • BFA or BA in Graphic Design or Illustration
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe CS: Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Bridge
  • Minimum 2 years of design experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members

Experience in publishing is a plus.
