Assistant Finance Director

Job Description: This responsible professional position assists in the overall direction and coordination of the daily activities of the Finance Division of the City of Charleston. Strong analytical, financial reporting, organizational and interpersonal skills are critical to be successful in this position. Other duties include: directing staff to ensure accuracy and timeliness of accounting records, personnel management, reviewing financial reports for completeness and accuracy, and assisting with the annual audit and preparation of Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. Familiarity with Governmental Accounting Standards Board and Governmental Finance Officers of America principles and practices is needed.

This position manages payroll, accounts payable and treasury functions, as well as fills in as needed for these positions, and prepares and oversees the preparation of journal entries, reconciliation of accounts, as well as analysis and compilation of revenue and expenditures. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for financial reporting as applicable to local government, and related computer application skills are essential. The Assistant Finance Director is an important part of the City”s Fly-Away Team and is expected to perform duties during an emergency. Candidates must also be proficient in WORD and EXCEL.

Requires: Bachelor”s degree in Accounting, Business or other related field, supplemented with 5 years of related experience in governmental accounting & auditing, minimum of 2 years supervisory experience. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) is preferred. Valid state issued driver’s license. $58,838 to $74,000 / Year –
