Assistant Area Traffic Engineer – Snohomish and Mt. Baker – WMS2

The Northwest Region (NWR) Traffic Office is excited to announce that we are recruiting for an Assistant Area Traffic Engineer – Snohomish & Mt. Baker .

The NWR of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is home to one of the most complex transportation infrastructures in the country, this includes major highways and tunnels, a number of floating bridges, an extensive Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and so much more.

The Assistant Area Traffic Engineer, among other things will supervise, provide design guidance and quality assurance for all WSDOT, local agency and developer projects and programs to ensure compliance with all applicable, federal, state and local policy and standards.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Lead, motivate, train and mentor staff.
  • Direct and participate in the development of solutions to complex multimodal problems and/or issues.
  • Develop and influence multimodal traffic engineering and design policies in Snohomish and Mt Baker Area. The MT. Baker Area consists of Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties.
  • Interpret and implement federal and state policies, rules and regulation related to traffic engineering.
  • Provided expert analysis and traffic design methodology to support and influence planning activities, project design and construction outcomes.
  • Address traffic operation concerns with public, local agencies and stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competitive candidates will possess the following:

  • Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering or closely related field
  • Masters of Science in Civil Engineering (desirable) – Traffic engineering emphasis preferred.
  • Licensed as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of Washington
  • Significant experience managing/leading traffic engineering, traffic operations, and traffic design involving all modes of travel.
    • Minimum 5 years practical traffic design/engineering and operations experience; including 1 year of developing and/or reviewing complex freeway/highway channelization.
  • Expert-level knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices and policies in the areas of transportation planning, traffic engineering design and safety management.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance and construction methods
  • Knowledge of contracting methods for small public works projects
  • Reputation for maintaining a professional demeanor and soft skills to work cooperatively with internal and external customers
  • Ability to communicate, negotiate and partner with a variety of different individuals both internal and external to the agency.
  • Possess ethical standards of conduct, integrity and honesty
