Area Coordinator for Student Development

The Area Coordinator for Student Development is professional position responsible for the leadership and diversity concerns of on campus housing including the day to day operation of a Multicultural Resource Center, a Leadership Center and the day to day operation of the Smurthwaite Leadership Scholarship House. This will include the co-supervision of four Assistant Coordinators for Departmental Initiatives (Graduate Assistants) and indirect supervision of one student Resident Assistant (RA). The position also advises student leadership groups and supports leadership programming for Hall Governing Boards and Apartment Living student groups. The Area Coordinator for Student Development is a 12-month full-time, unclassified professional, live-out position and reports to the Assistant Director for Departmental Initiatives.

Job Description:

The Area Coordinator for Student Development serves as part of a dynamic Area Coordinator team. The Area Coordinator is responsible for the department’s leadership and diversity initiatives. This includes the day to day operation of a Multicultural Resource Center, a Leadership Center and the day to day operation of the Smurthwaite Leadership Scholarship House. This will include the co-supervision of 4 Assistant Coordinators for Departmental Initiatives (Graduate Assistants) and indirect supervision of one Resident Assistant (RA); group presentations; student development; training; advising; administrative and managerial responsibilities; facilities management; and professional development and collaborative work with other senior staff members within all areas of Housing and Dining Services. The position also advises the K-State Association of Residence Halls and supports leadership programming for Hall Governing Boards and Apartment Living student groups. Additionally, this position provides leadership for the departmental Equity and Inclusion Committee.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide vision, direction and leadership for a leadership center and multicultural resource center for students and department staff.
  • Develop and maintain resources for a leadership center and multicultural center.
  • Design and implement student organization and individual student leadership programs.
  • Serve as the contact person for diversity and leadership issues for the Department of Housing and Dining Services and promote leadership development and multicultural competency development within all service units of the department.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the Equity and Inclusion Committee for the Department of Housing and Dining Services.
  • Provide information, training and resources to departmental staff on leadership and diversity issues.
  • Develop programs to support the specific leadership needs of underrepresented students.
  • Directs, oversees, and administers the operations of the Smurthwaite Leadership Scholarship House. Prepares reports; maintains records; approves student charges for damages or maintenance work and hears appeals for charges; manages program account and Social and Educational funds. Coordinate weekly meetings with Assistant Coordinator for Departmental Initiatives, that supports Smurthwaite, and the Resident Assistant that serve the residents.
  • Assist staff of the Smurthwaite with student issues concerning academics, peer conflicts, personal problems, etc. Provide leadership for educational, recreational, cultural, and social programs that complement student and community development goals within Smurthwaite. Attends meetings and sponsored community activities.
  • Co-advise the Association of Residence Halls with an Assistant Coordinator for Departmental Initiatives.
  • Provide indirect advisement and support of National Residence Hall Honorary members.
  • Advise student conference delegations at the regional and national level of student leaders within on campus living.
  • Advise and provide oversight for Wildcat Leadership Conference, a leadership conference for on campus organization leaders.
  • Design and implement programs that promote an understanding of diversity as a component of leadership.
  • Monitor and assess leadership and diversity environments, initiatives, and services in on campus living communities.
  • Coordinate leadership publications and marketing materials through collaboration with the Marketing and Communications Team.
  • Oversee annual budget to support leadership and diversity programs.
  • Serve as a member of the student living leadership team to provide leadership to the student living area including residence life, apartment living, and departmental initiatives.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to emergencies, crises, and other critical incidents in on campus living facilities.
  • Maintain positive relationships with the University and Manhattan community, campus leadership, students, faculty, staff, parents and guests.
  • Perform other duties to include, but not limited to participation on departmental and university committees, task forces, professional development activities and special projects.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in student personnel or related field and three years full-time experience in residence hall leadership or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prefer experience with diversity education, leadership development, programming, teaching and/or training.
