Analyst, Operations

The Operations Analysis team at TriMet are the solution finders and creators to many complex challenges we encounter in our growing organization. Our Analysis team partners with internal and external stakeholders within TriMet and across the region to identify trends, improve operational processes, and make informed decisions that allow us to move quickly, and keep the Portland area moving.

In this role you will analyze crucial data using a variety of statistical techniques from a wide range of sources including our Operations, Maintenance, and Customer Service teams. You will work on projects that may include continuous improvement of our rail maintenance program, analyzing safety and collision trends, and performance benchmarking. You will use your excellent customer service abilities and act as a consultant to communicate your findings and make data-driven recommendations that ensure that all TriMet teams you support remain up-to-date with crucial business information.

Essential Functions

  • Perform data analysis using appropriate statistical techniques from Agency information systems using query and reporting tools, noting sources, patterns and trends, assumptions, and methodologies. Communicate results of analysis and make data-supported recommendations. Provide operational and maintenance performance information and analysis, recommending appropriate indicators for measuring program performance.
  • Provide support for TriMet’s maintenance operations, including managing TriMet’s Maintenance Management Information System (MMIS), providing data analysis, business process documentation and recommendations based on data/process analysis.
  • Prepare periodic and ad hoc reports and presentations on operations and maintenance performance, measures and standards. Ensure data is accurately presented in a useful manner for decision-making. When appropriate, utilize a graphical representation of data.
  • Establish, document and maintain system procedures, data retention schedules, coding structures, systems security, and automated event scheduling for the operations and maintenance disciplines.
  • Assure integrity of application data and procedures. Identify and track application problems and ensure timely resolution in coordination with the Information Technology department.
  • Stay current on technical advances and governmental changes. Apply the new information as appropriate in TriMet. Developments to be watched would primarily revolve around vehicle (automotive, FMCSA, FTA, DOT, transportation/freight or rail) and infrastructure (primarily rail). Provide departmental expertise, leadership and advice on future equipment/policy issues, departmental information systems and technological upgrades or replacements.
  • Identify processes or opportunities for automation. Act as a liaison between maintenance and information technology in helping gather user requirements and ensure the successful implementation of an IT project.
  • Analyze and produce reports using TriMet’s vehicle location and automatic passenger counter data.
  • Analyze and review collision and safety related data.
  • Provide analytical support to other agency departments, including planning, scheduling, and field operations.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Business or related field.
  • A minimum of 6 years total credited experience. Related work experience that includes performing statistical data analysis, business system and process improvement analysis, presenting recommendations, and conducting research.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skill in database query languages, programming and reporting tools. Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Office suite applications including Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using Jasper and/or SAS
  • Proficiency in SQL
  • Familiarity with Oracle
