Airport Service Worker

To perform a variety of tasks to maintain the airport, passenger terminal building, and various types of equipment to ensure efficient, safe, sanitary and neat conditions.
Essential Duties: Performs daily inspections, reports outages and makes minor repairs as needed.

Maintains and polices airport terminal grounds, street and aircraft non-movement areas to comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Open and/or close the Terminal Building. Make security checks of fences and gates.

Maintain airport terminal grounds by using riding mowers, self-propelled mowers, weed-eaters, pruning shears, edgers and blowers.

Perform minor semi-skilled interior/exterior building maintenance and repairs such as painting, floor covering, plumbing, electrical, irrigation, carpentry, mechanical, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.

Perform a full range of custodial duties in the terminal building such as cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, cleaning windows and woodwork, emptying trash; changing light bulbs, fluorescent bulbs, vacuuming and shampooing of carpeted areas, removal and application of wax products on flooring, and other custodial duties as required.

Use aviation radios.

Responsible for preventative maintenance of all floor maintenance equipment and makes repairs as needed.

Reacts to aviation related emergencies.

Operate a hydroelectric mobile lift to perform vertical work at elevated heights.

Serve as a member on various employee committees as required and assigned.

Employee may represent the city at various conferences, seminars, and meetings.

Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver’s license, if required, and comply with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.

Move and set up furniture as needed and assigned.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Six (6) months of maintenance/custodial experience is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions;
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment; basic office correspondence and time management techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to work from heights.

Supplemental Information: SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employee must have valid Class C Texas driver’s license by date-of-hire.
  • Employee must pass a fingerprint-based background check by date-of-hire.
  • Employee must pass a TSA Security Threat Assessment (STA) by date-of-hire.
  • Employee may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Riding and push mowers, trucks, pesticide applicators, chemical protective gear, pressure washers, floor buffers/polishers/burnishers, portable heater, standby/portable generator, carpet cleaners, vacuums, edgers, weed-eaters, blowers, hydraulic and electric lifts, assorted power and hand tools, window cleaning, pressure washer, cleaning chemical dispensers, and appropriate safety equipment, as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk and hear.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet during indoor shift operations. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud when the employee is working outdoors due to airplane and/or equipment noise.

This is a safety sensitive position.
