Accounting Specialist

General Statement of Duties

Performs a variety of technical and accounting duties involved in the processing of payroll, tracking and balancing fixed assets and accounts payable; performs related work as required.

Classification Summary

The principal function of an employee in this class is to assist payroll, and accounts payable; track fixed assets and unclaimed property, perform general clerical and accounting support duties and records maintenance, and provide customer service. An Accounting Specialist must possess accounting, clerical, and customer service skills; he/she acquires knowledge of Department functions through on-the-job experience and is a department-related specialist with a good working knowledge of Department policies and procedures. The work is performed under the supervision of the Auditing Supervisor, although some latitude is granted for independent judgment using standard practices to resolve customer issues or correct procedures. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Acceptable Experience and Training

• High school diploma or GED equivalency is required with coursework in accounting, bookkeeping, or related field preferred; and
• Three (3) years accounting or bookkeeping experience is required; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Special Qualifications

• Proficiency in Ten- Key, MS Word and Excel required;
• Must successfully complete a background investigation through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
