Accounting Manager Job Description

Position Description : Accounting Manager

Basic Function: The accounting manager position is accountable for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

Principal Accountabilities:

Planning

  • Work with tax accountants to develop financial and tax strategies for equipment (i.e. tax depreciation)

Operations

  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department
  • Manage reporting for compliance with human resources, investor relations, banking, legal, tax, and treasury departments/functions
  • Manage outsourced functions (Paychex, Tax, Financial Audit, Insurance, etc.)
  • Oversee employee benefit plans, with particular emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package
  • Oversee the accounting operations of related entities, including control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the company’s transaction processing systems (timekeeper, data collection, etc.)
  • Implement operational best practices and controls based on recommendations from consultants
  • Maintain documentation of accounting policies and procedures

Risk Management

  • Maintain appropriate insurance coverage
  • Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies
  • Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations

Transactions

  • Oversight of staff accountant(s)
  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid by Staff Accountant/AP clerk in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken by Staff Accountant/AP clerk on accounts payable
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly by Staff Accountant/AR clerk
  • Ensure payroll is processed by Payroll clerk in a timely manner
  • Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations and other reconciliations are completed by Staff Accountant/GL clerk
  • Ensure that required debt payments are made by Staff Accountant/AP clerk on a timely basis
  • Ensure Staff Accountant/AP clerk’s filing system is complete including 3-way match for all payments (PO, Receiver, Invoice)
  • Ensure Staff Accountant/GL clerk maintains support for all journal entries and ensure reversing entries occur
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Perform timely month end close including related closing entries
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system (electronic and/or paper)
  • Work with management team to ensure the accurate completion of annual inventory count
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Ensure fixed assets are tagged and monitored and perform annual fixed asset count

Reporting

  • Issue timely and complete financial statements
  • Assemble information for and coordinate the preparation of the corporate annual audited report
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
  • Calculate estimated taxes and propose tax payments in conjunction with outside accountants

Compliance

  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants including monthly reporting
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Act as main point of contact for external accountants for tax return preparation

Desired Qualifications: The accounting manager candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 5+ years of progressively responsible experience for a manufacturing company or division of a large corporation. Candidates with the Certified Public Accountant designations desirable. Public accounting experience a plus. System Implementation, cost accounting, and job costing experience a plus. This position is part time or flex arrangement.
