Accountant/Analyst I

The City of Littleton has an opening for an Accountant/Analyst I. The Accountant/Analyst is responsible for day-to-day accounting of various funds in all aspects of the Finance Department, including accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, grants, budgeting and financial statement preparation. Reconciles general ledger accounts. Generates journal entries and budget revisions. Performs other related accounting duties. Works under the supervision of the Accounting Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for day-to-day accounting of various funds in all aspects of the Finance Department, including accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, grants, budgeting and financial statement preparation.
  • Reconciles general ledger accounts to subsidiary ledgers or external statements (banks, bonds and pension funds).
  • Generates daily and monthly journal entries as necessary.
  • Assists with the preparation of audit work papers and schedules required for external audit for review.
  • Prepares annual CAFR for review.
  • Assists in the preparation of various budget schedules for the annual budget process.
  • Prepares budget document for review
  • Performs research and compilation of special projects and financial reports.
  • Maintains capital assets.
  • Researches, analyzes and evaluates new service delivery methods and techniques.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Answers questions from city staff regarding accounting matters.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.
  • Performs other assignments and projects as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS & SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

This Position Reports To: Accounting Manager

This Position Has Supervisory Responsibility For: As assigned by the Accounting Manager

Education, Formal Training & Experience:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a closely related field; and
  • Requires a minimum of one year progressively responsible accounting experience with a working knowledge of modern computer applications, or
  • Requires an equivalent combination of education, formal training, and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Solid working knowledge of Financial Edge accounting software is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Requires solid knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting, GAAP and GASB and the ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Experience or knowledge with preparing Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports ( CAFR ).
  • Requires solid knowledge of the principles and practices of using personal computers, creating and using computer spreadsheets and word processing programs and the ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Requires a high degree of attention to detail, the ability to gain understanding and identify alternative solutions to problems.
  • Requires a basic ability to research, analyze and evaluate methods and techniques.
  • Requires solid skills and abilities that involve written and verbal communication techniques for report writing, correspondence, providing customer service, giving directions or feedback.
  • Requires solid ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Requires solid keyboarding and data entry skills to effectively utilize software, including word processing, spreadsheets and financial management software and the Internet.
  • Requires solid skills and abilities that include analyzing data, breaking down problems, identifying relationships between issues, and making complex plans.
  • Requires solid knowledge, skills, and abilities that include developing plans for managing multiple tasks simultaneously, setting deadlines, and preparing for future events.
  • Requires the ability to understand verbal information and instruction. Ability to exchange information with others and to develop and present recommendations.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

  • Personal computer, scanner, printer, telephone, and ten-key calculator.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Physical activities include occasionally lifting and carrying of files or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds; frequent reaching, handling, fingering, and feeling to operate office equipment talking and hearing to establish and maintain in-person and telephone communications; constant seeing with near and far acuity and depth perception to operate office equipment, see people and work products, and operate a personal vehicle.
  • This work is performed indoors in a standard office environment.
  • Long periods of sitting, standing or walking may be required.
