Accountant III (1013010)

Under the general direction of the Legal Accounting Manager, the Accountant III assists with the month-end and year-end close processes, year-end GAAP analyses, preparation of financial statements, and the general internal and external reporting for the University. Assists with the operational functions of the Legal and GAAP Accounting departments. Conduct the analysis and resolution of problems using reasoning and the interpretation and application of GAAP and applicable State, CSU and CSULB policies. Develop, present, and recommend alternatives and execute best courses of action.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and to be accountable for own work results for effective and timely completion of work assignments. Ability to independently handle multiple projects in a fast paced environment. Ability to proactively and effectively resolve issues within existing policies and procedures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for communication with various levels of customers (students, faculty/staff, and vendors).

Developed analytical and technical skills for the performance of fluctuation, variance, ratio, projection, and trend analyses. Thorough knowledge of correct English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation, in addition to excellent written and verbal communication skills for communication with various levels of customers (students, faculty/staff, and vendors), and for the preparation of narratives and discussion & analysis included with financial statements. Experience with the application of problem solving techniques in finding solutions to complex problems. Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP) for preparation of financial statements and preparing for audits. Thorough knowledge of financial record-keeping methods, sound accounting controls, business processes, policies, and procedures (higher education experience preferred) to interpret and apply the effects of policies and rules to financial analyses and projections, and maintenance of the Chart of Accounts. Ability to review financial documents for accuracy, completeness, validity and adherence to standards.

Excellent working knowledge with personal computer, word processing, spreadsheet and database software, and experience working with automated financial applications (PeopleSoft preferred) for responding to inquiries and preparing financial analyses and reports.

Ability to utilize queries for preparing financial analyses and ad hoc reports from the financial applications. Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, alertness, and good judgment when responding to others, pursuant to the establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university’s commitment to a “vision of excellence.”

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and five years of related experience. Financial Reporting experience very desirable. Public Accounting experience preferred. CPA preferred.
