JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE

Grant and Project Accounting Division

Number of Positions: 1

Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level professional accounting duties, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Reviews and enters program and operating budgets
  • Prepares requests for reimbursements to federal and state grantors
  • Reviews sub-award (delegate agency) agreements for accuracy
  • Codes, records, and updates journal entries (e.g., expenditures, account transfers, and budget revisions) using manual and computerized spreadsheets
  • Reviews financial documents to ensure entries are accurate, appropriately allocated, and comply with funding guidelines
  • Monitors account balances and informs appropriate City management of necessary fund re-allocations to ensure the availability of funds to cover projected expenditures
  • Prepares basic financial statements, balance sheets, expense/revenue statements, and financial reports using computer spreadsheets
  • Analyzes historical records and anticipated economic trends and participates in forecasting future expenses and revenues
  • Verifies receipts (e.g., from cashiers and lockboxes, reimbursements, petty cash fund) with data in computerized systems and makes adjustments if needed
  • Maintains files of departmental information related to assigned projects/programs
  • Communicates with internal and external representatives that are associated with assigned projects/programs

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a directly related field with 15 semester hours in Accounting

NOTE: You must provide your college or university transcripts with 15 credit hours of accounting courses at the time of interview. IF YOU FAIL TO PROVIDE this information at the time of interview, you will not be allowed to proceed with the interview and will no longer be considered for this position.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to successfully complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Previous experience working with federal and state grant guidelines
  • Proficiency working with financial accounting systems, such as Oracle
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Word
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Excel

VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documents. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering “yes” or “no” to the question on the online application that asks, “Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?” In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.

Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
