EXAMPLES OF WORK:

The Nebraska Department of Labor is looking for an Accountant I to join the Unemployment Insurance Tax Operations team. The Accountant I will perform duties in all facets for UI Tax Status and Accounting including: work with UI Tax-related systems, spreadsheets, and databases; manage bulk filing process used by payroll reporting services for filing quarterly wage and tax reports; establish quarterly timetables for electronic submittals; troubleshoot electronic tax and wage reports not accepted by our system; make appropriate adjustments so transactions can post to correct employer accounts; follow-up with bulk filers regarding issues, corrections, and changes; review electronic files to ensure file layout contains required inputs to meet quarterly tax requirements; responsible for Tax System file maintenance; includes change of address documents, out of business requests, updates to Physical Location address, updates for account cancellations and liability determinations; verify required data on UI Tax applications to ensure all processing information for new employer accounts is included; assist individuals completing applications both orally and in writing; utilize Secretary of State website to obtain supporting documentation for new employer applications; assist employers filing tax reports electronically using UI Connect or bulk filing; review tax reports to determine reporting inaccuracies; calculate employer tax rates and help employers determine when voluntary payments can lower their costs; assist employers on UI Connect Help Line to answer tax-related questions; utilize Excel, Word, and Outlook E-mail for preparing reports and communicating with customers.

Hours: 8-5, Monday – Friday.

Job location is 550 South 16th Street, Downtown.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIREMENTS: Post high school coursework in accounting, finance, business administration or related field or vocational school OR experience performing accounting functions including interpreting and analyzing financial data.

PREFERRED: Two years’ accounting experience or six credit hours in postsecondary level accounting courses OR two years’ postsecondary education in public administration, business administration, accounting, auditing, or banking OR three years’ work experience with Unemployment Insurance programs, employment services, insurance, business, mathematics, banking, or related field. Prefer experience working in a regulated environment, or working with the public to resolve problems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, Excel. Ability to: apply statute, regulations, and accounting principles in order to advise employers, accountants, and attorneys; listen to customers and understand information received; calculate interest and penalty due; develop and apply equations and/or formulas using Excel.
