Background

AV Ventures, LLC is a mission-oriented, Delaware-registered investment management firm based in Washington, DC that manages investments in agribusinesses in emerging markets, particularly in West Africa. AV Ventures is a wholly-owned subsidiary of ACDI/VOCA, an international development nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C, United States that fosters broad-based economic growth, raises living standards, and creates vibrant communities. ACDI/VOCA’s mission is to promote economic opportunities for cooperatives, enterprises and communities through the innovative application of sound business practice.

As a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded Ghana Poultry Project (GPP) implemented by ACDI/VOCA, AV Ventures and the investment vehicle it manages, AV Ventures Ghana, lend to financial institutions and small and medium-sized enterprises in Ghana’s poultry sector to generate a positive social, environmental, and economic impact, as well as a financial return. AV Ventures also helps design innovative financial products to generate both a financial return and positive social impact for the loans it manages in Ghana.

Summary

We’re looking for an organized and driven part-time Accountant to join our growing team at AV Ventures. The Accountant will work closely with our DC-based and Ghana-based teams to handle bookkeeping, accounting, and process improvement. We’re an energetic company and are looking for a committed individual to join our organization, revitalize our record keeping, and bring more organization to our day-to-day financials.

Responsibilities

  • Perform weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual accounting activities, including but not limited to reconciliations of bank and credit card accounts, processing payments for invoices, booking loan disbursements, coordination and completion of annual audits in accordance with US GAAP, and reviewing financial reports/support as necessary.
  • Documents financial transactions by entering account information.
  • Recommends financial actions by analyzing accounting options.
  • Prepares payments by verifying documentation, and requesting disbursements.
  • Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Where needed, recommend improvements to systems and procedures and implement new processes and/or initiate corrective actions.
  • Analyze and report on financial status including income statement, cash flow statements, and balance sheet variances; communicates financial results to management, budget preparation, and analysis.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Reconciles financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
  • Secures financial information by completing data base backups.
  • Maintains financial security by following internal controls.
  • To the extent needed, work across ACDI/VOCA’s accounting and finance department to develop internal processes and procedures for ACDI/VOCA and AV Ventures’ accounting and finance interactions.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or similar
  • Minimum of 6 years of accounting experience, including audit
  • Expertise in QuickBooks
  • Extensive knowledge of US GAAP
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office, accounting software, and databases
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management and communication skills
  • Experience in international accounting and working across multiple offices and countries
  • CPA certification preferred
  • Willing and excited to work in a start-up environment for a socially-driven investment firm
  • Work will be performed remotely. Applicants with the ability to have in-person meetings as needed at our Washington, DC office are highly preferred.

Start date of June 8, 2017 or before is highly preferred. Part-time work is estimated at 20-25 hours per month. Work will be performed remotely; however, applicants with the ability to have in-person meetings as needed at our Washington, DC office are highly preferred.
