Founded in 1888, the Washington State BarAssociation (WSBA) is part of the judicial branch, exercising a governmentalfunction authorized by the Washington Supreme Court to license the state’snearly 37,000 lawyers. The WSBA both regulates lawyers under the authority ofthe Court and serves its members as a professional association, all withoutpublic funding. As a regulatory agency, the WSBA administers the bar admissionprocess, including the bar exam; provides record-keeping and licensingfunctions; and administers the lawyer discipline system. As a professionalassociation, the WSBA provides continuing legal education for attorneys, inaddition to numerous other educational and member-service activities.

The Finance and AdministrationDepartment in the Washington State Bar Association has an exceptional opportunity foran Accountant. R esponsibilities for theAccountant include p reparingand maintaining the WSBA’s automated general ledger, fixed assets subsidiaryledgers, and other accounting records; preparing the WSBA’s monthly financialstatements; managing the annual sections budget process; assisting theController with the annual general fund budget and coordination of the annualaudit; processing payroll on a semi-monthly basis and maintaining payrollsystem data.

Principal responsibilities:
General Ledger

Maintain the general ledger; makes journal entries, establish chart ofaccounts; review journal entries as they are received to ensure proper coding;review financial statements for miscodings to G/L accounts and ensure accuracyof statements in accordance with GAAP. Analyze and reconcile G/L accounts on aregular basis.

Financial Reports Prepare monthly financial reports; prepare special LFCP financial statements and other financial summary or analysis reports as needed; coordinate review of sections financial statements with WSBA’s sections team.

Process semi-monthly payroll Maintains payroll records by verifying changes in status for employees, insurance coverage, retirement selections, and all other payroll related items; collaborates with HR and Controller to obtain information for semi-monthly payroll process.

Benefits reporting/maintenance Prepares reports and maintains records for : Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) online Deferred Compensation remittance report; DRS monthly transmittal report for all employee and employer retirement contributions; ensures all changes to benefits are reflected in the monthly Health Care Authority report and medical plan selections for new employees occur in the required timeframe; performs monthly reconciliation of medical contribution liability account and provides a listing of all outstanding amounts at year-end for external audit; prepares quarterly L&I insurance report and payment .

Year End Audit Prepare and review month-end journal entries, ensure an accurate and timely monthly-end and year-end close, ensure the timely reporting of all monthly and yearly financial information, and coordinate WSBA’s annual external independent audit.

Annual Budget Assist the Controller in managing the annual budget process by preparing documents, compiling drafts and related reports, and track changes from draft to draft; prepare indirect budgets; manage the annual sections budget process in coordination with WSBA’s sections team; administer all budget information in Navision™ and coordinate transfer of new budget at the beginning of each fiscal year.

Fixed Assets, Employee timesheet and leave accrual management Accurately maintain accounting and fixed asset records, record fixed asset transactions; work with IT Department to set up and properly account for Capital Labor projects; perform periodic physical inventory and balances results to fixed assets records; review timesheets per pay period for appropriateness and approval requirements; maintain employee leave accrual balances; administer the set-up of leave accruals in ADP WorkForce Now™; perform periodic audits of balances; prepare quarterly vacation and comp time balances report.

Other duties invariablyarise, and the Accountant will be expected todemonstrate agility in incorporating additional responsibilities during thecourse of their work.

Education : Bachelor’sDegree in accounting, finance, or business administration, or a combination of education, training or experience whichprovides an equivalent background required to perform the duties associatedwith this position. Highly qualified candidate will possess a CPA license.

Requirements : Experienceas a controller, accountant, or auditor; general ledger experience; experiencewith general ledger and financial statements; extensive experience usingaccounting software and Excel. Experience working with or forcertified public accountants is preferred.

Proficiencies : Should be able todemonstrate extensive knowledge of accounting; able to understand and apply allaccounting principles, policies, and procedures; excellent verbal & writtencommunication skills; must work well with others and facilitate opencommunication among staff; possess solid judgment, decision making, and problemsolving skills; have good analytical skills and the ability to research and understandcomplex issues; be highly proficient in the use of MS WORD and Excel softwareprograms; have exceptional time management and organizational skills and the abilityto manage and prioritize multiple projects.

Highly qualified candidates will also have knowledgeof auditing procedures and/or public accounting experience; knowledge of fixedasset inventory and depreciation schedules; experience with a variety of accounting software packages; publicspeaking and presentation skills; proficiency in PowerPoint software and excellentcoaching and training skills (explaining rules and policies to others, teachingothers how to do things, etc.).

In addition to the Controller, the Accountant is theWSBA’s main contact with the external auditors and has external contact withADP, the WSBA’s payroll processing provider. Internally, the Accountant workswith all WSBA departments on a regular basis and must be able to use plainlanguage to explain accounting procedures, financial information and payrollprocesses to non-accounting staff.

The Accountant works in an office environment. Much of the work is done on the computer. The Accountant performs physical inventoriesat the WSBA office and off-site, so the Accountant must be able to get tooff-site locations and perform physical counts. The Accountant must be able touse the telephone, email, and fax to interact with outside and internal staff.
