THE CITY : A general law city, incorporated on April 1, 1964, is located adjacent to the cities of Long Beach, Lakewood, and Los Alamitos in Los Angeles County. The City, with an area of one square mile, is largely residential with full recreation facilities. Hawaiian Gardens is governed by a five (5) member City Council, each Councilmember being elected at-large for a term of four (4) years. The City is served by the ABC Unified School District .

THE PO SI TI ON : Under the direction of the Finance Director, performs a variety of complex general detailed accounting work. Provides technical leadership in posting and maintaining ledgers. Please note : Position may occasionally may include working weekdays, weekends, nights, evenings, holidays and special events. *This immediate vacancy is in the Finance Department.

TYPICAL DUTIES: Process the City wide payroll. Prepare and post all payroll journal entries. Remit and file payroll taxes. Calculate and prepare PERS retirement contributions of all vested qualified employees. Prepare and distribute allocations and post journal entries according to Bargaining Unit MOUs. Monitors and updates the daily cash position of the City, check deposits and ACH credits. Maintain general and subsidiary ledgers, journals, budgetary and cost accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices. Maintain budgetary control. Post, maintain and analyze records for various accounts and funds. Reconcile subsidiary and control accounts. Conduct wire transfers and other related disbursements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to work in an office setting, moderate noise level, near video display; frequently use hands, fingers, and arms to operate computer keyboard, calculator and office equipment; regularly sit and occasionally stand, walk and lift and/or carry records that weigh up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Qualification Guidelines : Bachelor’s degree in accounting and a minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience. Is required. Knowledge of principles and practices of accounting, budgets, financial statements, accounting codes and posting procedures are required. Ability to perform complex detailed accounting work quickly and accurately. Ability to provide technical leadership in posting and maintaining ledgers. Ability to maintain general and subsidiary ledgers, journals, budgetary and cost accounting records in accordance with General Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP). Bilingual skills in English and Spanish is highly desirable. A valid State of California Class C Driver’s License is required.
