Academic Wage-Salaried: Research Associate

The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering ( MIME ) invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, academic wage salaried position. This position is anticipated to last 6 months.

The purpose of this position is to support and conduct research within the areas of metallurgy, metals manufacturing, or metals product design, including alloy development, casting, joining, corrosion, metals manufacturing methods and optimization (including industrial engineering), and engineering design of products and objects comprised of metal. This is a 6-month appointment.

Position Duties

60% Research: Conduct research within the areas of metallurgy, metals manufacturing, or metals product design, including alloy development, casting, joining, corrosion, metals manufacturing methods and optimization (including industrial engineering), and engineering design of products and objects comprised of metal.

Duties also include identifying collaborations with industry and national laboratories and funding opportunities to support these research areas.

40% Project management: Will include monitoring the timely progress towards meeting technical milestones, preparing reports for sponsors, managing budgets, mentoring student researchers, and assisting in the submission of new proposals, as required.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

PhD in Materials Science focused on laser additive manufacturing of metals and composites (working with LENS and SLM ).

Strong back ground in metallurgy and welding.

Excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Expertise in additive manufacturing to produce graded alloys for the purpose of alloy development.

Experience on understanding of the microstructural evolution during service, chemical makeup analysis and failure root cause analysis for both model alloys and structural materials (in particular additively manufactured materials).

Working experience with LENS and SLM systems.

Excellent experience with state-of-the-art materials characterization techniques including: TEM , SEM , atom probe, FIB , XRD .

Experience mentoring students.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
